NOTES ON INDIVIDUAL SPANISH RELEASES:

The first Spanish Black Jack edition was the 12-volume Glenat edition which matched the earlier French edition. A new 25 volume release is now planned, which will probably match the Italian edition, based on the original Shounen Champion collection, which is the most complete edition to date.

Bajo el Aire is the only European release of Tezuka's dark sci-fi-ish short story anthology "Under the Air" (Kuki no Soko" published 1971-2.

Phoenix (Fénix), deserves a brief sidenote:

  • The first 11 volumes correspond to the first 4 volumes
    • Spanish Vol. 1-4 (titled “Los albores de la historia”) correspond to first english vol. “Dawn”
    • Spanish Vol. 5-7 (titled “el Futuro”) correspond to 2nd english vol. “Future”
    • Spanish vol. 8-9 (titled “la epoca Yamato”) correspond to 3rd english vol. “Yamato”
    • Spanish vol. 10-11 (titled “el espacio”) correspond to 4th english vol. “Universe”
  • The next 2 spanish volumes, “Fenix 2” correspond to the 5th volume: “Karma”.
  • The volume “Fenix: Resurrección” corresponds to the 6th volume, “Resurrection”.
  • The 7th to 12th vols. of Phoenix are not published in Spanish.

The Spanish edition of Adolf twice won the Best Manga award at Barcelona's comic fair in 2000 and 2001.

Also out in Spanish is the one-volume translated edition of Tezuka's adaptation Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment, titled in Spanish Crimen y Castigo. This is the only Western edition of Crime and Punishment still in print, though a bilingual English/Japanese version was put out in 1990.

INFORMATION ABOUT SPANISH ANIME RELEASES

At this time we do not have any details about Spanish language DVD or VHS releases of Tezuka anime, but beginning in the early 1970s "Ambassador Magma" was broadcast in Spain and other countries as "Monstruos del Espacio" and "W3" ("Amazing 3") was broadcast in Spanish-speaking countries (including Mexico) as "Los tres espaciales." "Triton of the Sea" was dubbed into Spanish and broadcast as "Triton."
