Top 30 Movies of All Time

Due to cmoon's comments I had a discussion with my mom about my picks for horror and she made a startling observation which sent me to the floor.

I totally neglected one of the most powerfully frightening horror movies of all time:

The Shining - 1985

This movie I believe was one of the last great Horror Flicks of the 20th century, and definitely outshines my 3 picks on scale of fright.

This movie is beyond words, especially for many people like myself which grew up in a household with a psychopathic father. Yes, my dad did once try to kill my mom and try to kill me. Thankfully he was stopped both times (myself and a phone call).

So maybe that's why I keep blocking this movie out of my mind. It's more realistic to me (even with the supernatural aspect) than the other movies.

While you are at it, don't forget the Exorcist. May people really forget how utterly terrifying this film is, especially when you see it in a theatre. Most people who say it isn't terrifying justify it by saying they are athiests and don't find the ideas in the film scary, but they're full of crap. As an athiest, I can say that this film is incredibly harrowing and devastating in the threatre. It is not one of my top picks (again, The Thing, Alien, The Descent), but both The Shining and Exorcist are top notch films and definitely way up there on the truly horrifying scale.

Yeah I'm putting the Exorcist in the same pile as Psycho. It got more press than it actually deserved.

The novel of the Exorcist put the movie to shame. The whole pea soup barf was so ridiculous it has yet to finish its rounds in the comedy scene.

There is nothing historically speaking that suggests that The Exorcist affected how movies were made or viewed. Though I am sure it was a good movie, it's not going to make my top 30.

However, feel free to add it to your top 30 if you disagree 8)

Did you see it in the theatre when it was re-released? Seriously, I didn't give the movie too much credit until I saw it in the theatre.

Seriously, I'm not just putting any movie on my list, only movies which altered the movie scene on and off the silver screen. Exorcist doesn't make my cut.

But you can stick it on your list ^_^

Godzilla 1954/1955

Basically the same movie, despite American edits placing Raymond Burr in to gather an "American Reporter's" perspective (which I think is just the same story told from two different people rather than being a "rewrite" like many claim).

This movie affected Monster Movies like none other.

Without Godzilla, I doubt we'd even have Jurassic Park.

That is why this movie made my top 30. It altered movies in such a way that no one could have ever foreseen.

The 47 Ronin 1941-1942

This movie was more like a "T.V. Series" before the term was dubbed. It is in fact, two movies. They were produced by a director that was very much against the butchering of the Bushido concept by the Imperialist Nationalists of Japan into a "We are the supermen of the world!" type of trash.

The first movie (rather the first part of the movie) nearly cost him his life. That's why it's got two copyright dates. His production was indefinitely suspended, confiscated, and he nearly lost everything. It was out of luck, and turning tides of war that he managed to complete the second part.

This movie definitely encapsulates that Honor is far from the perverted code misconstrued by the Imperialist Japanese during their wartime expansion, and is, in fact, a very horrible weapon that can be used to justify mindless and unwarranted violence.

This version of the 47 Ronin is like no other ever made before or since, and set the standard by which all productions of the 47 Ronin are judged. Those who despise this movie tend to have strong Imperialist drives. Those who accept the movie tend to oppose the Imperialist Japanese movement (which, btw, rears its ugly head every generation).

If there ever were two movies to use to judge the seed from which modern Japanese society sprouted, these are the two movies (Godzilla and 47 Ronin).

Inherit the Wind

This movie encapsulates the absolute ignorance of ultra extremist creationists in this country, and how dangerous mixing religion with politics is on the social order of things.

This is a based on a true story, using the court records of the infamous John Scopes Trial often called "Monkey Trial" or "Scopes Monkey Trial" of 1925. With a judge who refused to listen to evidence, the only thing argued in the kangaroo court of law was the book of Genesis.

Intelligence, science, and critical thinking were censored, as this Judge read aloud of the bible for 1-1 1/2 hours every morning at the start of the trial.

It isn't the movie which makes the ultra-religious people look like idiots in this movie, it is their own words captured by the court recorder. It's a warning of what can happen to this country if we start outlawing science and allowing the bible dictate what is and is not taught in the schools.

The following is my list and does not necessarily reflect the lists of other posters in this thread:

2001: A Space Odyssey
Blade Runner
Ghostbusters
Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas
Father Goose
Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope
Superman
Alien
Nightmare on Elm Street
Fright Night
The Shining - 1985
Godzilla 1954/1955
The 47 Ronin 1941-1942
Inherit the Wind

Those are the first 14, so let's make it an even 15:

Rocky

I was going to post another "heavy" movie (heavy as in importance), however, it's time for something else - a Heavyweight movie.

Few people realize how important Rocky was and remains to the movie industry. Rocky was written by Sylvester Stallone, and produced as an independent picture. This movie broke ground by awarding Sylvester Stallone two nominations: Best Actor and Best Writing. A new actor/writer to the scene, gets two major nominations on his first run out on an independent film. This film made history.

The film won best director, best film editing and best picture, but it's Sylvester's nominations which managed to send this Indy into the spotlight.

While independent films were common place during Charlie Chaplain's time at United Artists (an "independent" movie production company), they had begun to lose major ground in the theaters. Rocky brought that back. What more, whenever an independent film comes along, such as the Cohen Brothers, it's almost as if "Gonna Fly Now" is playing behind their drive.

Like him or not, his politics, or his attitude, Sylvester Stallone did more for the modern movie industry by refusing to give up on his Boxing picture, than any other director or producer.

Gojira 54 is definitely deserving. I can't say the same thing for the 55 edit. Too much of the heart of the movie is edited out for my taste.

Inherit the Wind? I still need to see it, but as a staunch evolutionist, and educator, I'm bound to see it at some point.

Hah! Have you seen Judgment Day (the nova special about the recent Dover/Kitzmiller trial)? Pretty much wipes the floor with intelligent design and does an excellent job explaining both evolutionary theory and the importance of the division of church and state.

I'd love to donate a copy to Sarah Palin, though I'm sure she'd only watch it if I mail'd it to her inside the carcass of a caribou.

You need to watch Inherit the Wind, and I am surprised you haven't already!

I have a lot of major problems with Palin, surprisingly as much as I hate the so called "Intelligent Design", her fanatical creationism is a lower rung on the list of problems I have with the witch.

Her vowing to secede Alaska from the Nation, and involvement in the traitorous para-military domestic-terrorist organization "Alaska First" is closer to the top.

And yes, that organization is under "domestic terrorist" watch.

As far as Godzilla goes, I consider 54 and 55 to be the same event captured from two diff news crews so I can't honestly separate the two since they had the same impact world wide due to their close release dates.
