I'm not denying it, rather, it is old news. It doesn't change the fact that good games are still being made, AND many retro-titles have coming out as well (most of which have been ignored.)

I can't change the view of the companies which own the consoles, but I'll fall back to an old adage: I play video games, not consoles.

I realize the 'wall-o-text' posts were pretty much impenetrable, but if you could give 'em a shot--especially some of the links to outstanding recent titles--it might help this discussion actually be a discussion.

From my point of view this is what I've seen so far:
Initial argument: Video gaming died with the DC

Counter argument: No, it didn't. The PS2 has dozens of great titles, many of which are retro-oriented toward the old school gamer. The sheer number of good games may outstrip the 'classic' consoles.

Rebuttal (Kevin): I don't know about that because I haven't played those games, but Sony and Xbox have anti-2D policies. New games don't have any heart or soul.

Rebuttal from me: Games are developed and distributed based on sales. Jaded old-school gamers aren't supporting the developers who are sticking out their necks to make old-school games available (how many of you purchased Gradius 5, Raiden 3, Red Star, Blast Works, Castle of Shishigami(sp?) 2 or 3, King of Fighters 11, Various Atlus outings (RPGs, Fighters, etc.), etc., etc., etc.?????)

(Whatever comes after reBUTTal): I haven't played those games but the new consoles have an anti-2D stance, so....

?????????????
I guess I'll be the one person supporting all the new, old-skool titles, while you guys play emulations and complain about how bad gaming is. Sorry, your loss.

Also, thought it was link time (since I don't see you guys following these):

Gradius V

Silent Hill 2 (horror video game)
No real video captures what this does, but the 'only lit by flashlight' concept creates a claustrophobic and terrifying atmosphere not really accomplished in any other game.

Katamari Damacy

ESP Galuda

Shadow of the Colossus (Oh noes! A great game by sony!)

And I'll repost those God Hand links (coz I love the crap out of that game):

Disgaea
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lQQ4IP-hDko

Odin Sphere
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-qiF8jdP ... re=related

This list could obviously go on a very long time.

You say I'm dodging the issue, but I think not. The issue is that video games died with the dreamcast! which is proven by the links above. Clearly all of these games are horrible, and the dozens of other games I omitted are just as horrible. Any innovation in these games should be counted against them (since gamers want to play the same thing over and over) and the obvious heritage of video gaming was only forced on them by tyrannical console companies.

I also need to side with the two other posters in this thread, that sony and microsoft need to be singled out as over-controlling jerks while Nintendo and Sega CLEARLY are the patron saints of video games, never attempting to manipulate developers, over-control their consoles or drive stupid franchises into the ground while ignoring new and promising ideas in the video game community.

The only point I've seen being dodged so far is that CLEARLY good video games are still being made as we speak--but somehow video games died with the DC. Right!

Again, cmoon, you are generalizing what's been said.

Nobody said Dream Cast was the last great system. (or at least I don't remember us saying that)

What we've said was: There's been a lack of originality, variety, and effort made on behalf of the gaming companies to provide the consumer with the same type of broad spectrum we had pre-dreamcast downfall era.

Nintendo does try to do what it always did - variety. Only it's kinda piss poor because it has no real competition.

Most of those games you linked are the same 5 genres we've seen come out of Sony and Microsoft - no variety of gameplay, high eye candy content, and nothing else.

When you can show me games like Battle Chess, TIE Fighter, Zork, Golden Sun, Sim City, on either Sony or Microsoft systems, I will retract my statement at the pathetic showing made by both companies.

Nintendo seems to be the only console that actually tries to have a minimum of 12 completely different genres of videogaming.

Just got back to reading this thread, (been working on an animation project of mine, going to see "Dark Knight", and watching episodes of "Jem and the Holograms" on Youtube). BTW, Kevin Check your PM box.

Oh my god, this has gone too far!

I'm sorry I said anything.

But let's take a look at what I said to kick this off...

"Gaming pretty much turned to crap after the Dreamcast died. It was like the last good system.."

Hmm, I guess I can eat some humble pie on the second sentence of that. The DC was not the last good system (just my fav).

But, you know, I still stand by the first sentence "Gaming pretty much turned to crap after the Dreamcast died". I just didn't realize it came back.

I mean immediately after the DC died, it was horrible. I still say that, at the time I turned my back on console gaming, the future looked pretty damned bleak.

But, it looks like things brightened up a couple years later. I honestly wasn't aware of that, because at the time my gaming interests had turned towards indie games, old NES games, and throwing my own games together in Gamemaker. I stopped reading game magazines, and whatever happened, happened.

So, I'm changing my official stance. It's now "Gaming pretty much turned to crap after the Dreamcast died. But, I just now noticed it came back". Can we all just chill now?

Now just to resolve a few issues...

The "Final Fantasy games are feminine/gay" thing.

I think you completely misinterpreted what I said about that. But, that's OK because I think I did the same thing to you, first. So, let's just forget it.

BTW I want to point out that I was a little bit sick when I made that big post.

Besides, if you want a homoerotic game, check out the "Ch

I love the PS2 because it gave us Ratchet and Clank, Katamari Damacy, and Kingdom Hearts. Also, anyone who complains about a lack of creativity in video games should check out Psychonauts. It's everything people complain video games aren't these days. (and yet sadly, no one bought it :( ) I totally want a Wii. Game consoles aren't about hardware power as far as i'm concerned. They're about having fun. While Sony and Microsoft are praticlly "flexing their hardware muscles" Nintendo's taking it back a ways saying "Hey, why don't we just play?"
Mind you, that being said, I also love the X-Box 360. My brother and I are right now totally in love with Lego Star Wars II!
and I don't recall who here said they despise GTA but i'm totally with them. GTA must die.
