Hamegg page for the site

Postby madamluna » Mon Feb 06, 2012 4:37 am

[Edit: I just realized I forgot to put in his first appearance! fixed]

Here's my Hamegg page for TiE! Let me know if there's any changes I should make. I grabbed the appearance list from , but I changed a couple of the names of the stories/books to be more recognizable (like "Angel Gunfighter" and "Gas" and "Emergency Shelter" from Black Jack).

---

Hamegg is one of Osamu Tezuka's most widely used character actors, appearing for the first time in The Old Man's Treasure Island in 1945. He almost always plays a villainous role, and when he does, it's usually as a henchman or lackey to another character (usually Duke Red, and sometimes Skunk). His roles run the gamut from lighthearted comedy to darker, more violent characters, and oftentimes the parts he plays involve elements of both. He's probably most well known for his roles as the sadistic ringmaster in Astro Boy, Inspector Akabane of the secret police in Adolf, and as the hunter Viper Snakely in Jungle Emperor Leo.

With his round head, permanent grin and large, peering eyes (derived from the Hollywood actor Peter Lorre), Hamegg's appearance is one of the most distinctive among Tezuka's varied cast, and help illustrate him as a consummate shyster. He's motivated by greed and is extremely dishonest, going so far as to cross and double-cross the people he's working with, though he bends easily when he's scared or threatened.

He's usually partnered with Acetylene Lamp, another go-to character actor for Tezuka's henchmen and thugs, and Tezuka felt that they partnered particularly well together ( http://tezukaosamu.net/en/character/563.html ). They often show up together in stories and background sequences, particularly in Astro Boy, although they've also teamed up in other stories as well.

Great job. I'm going to make a few small adjustments, but basically add it as is to the Hamegg page. Thanks for helping out!

I could add his appearances in the anime DVDs I have. As far as MIGHTY ATOM goes, he most often depicts showmen, but occasionally plain old scoundrels. I would not mind simply listing those appearances, but really want to reserve details for my book.
