On the subject of Cleopatra: I was listening to a podcast a while ago, and the hosts seemed to saying that Cleopatra was a massive failure or something ... any idea what they're talking about?

I have no idea; there are other versions of "Cleopatra" & Tezuka himself did an animated one:

Besides that, the Astroboy stories are not about THE Cleopatra, but a robot that was presented as Cleopatra reincarnated or resurrected.
