The English Publication History of Black Jack The Manga

So Black Jack was picked up by VIZ Media and they had the first couple of chapters put into two mini comics titled Black Jack Special Under The Knife (1995) and Black Jack Special Operation Down Under (1998). Also VIZ Media released some of the first Black Jack chapters into a english manga magazine called Manga Vizion, the Manga Vizion volumes that it was published in was Volume 3 Issue 9 through Volume 4 Issue 8 that lasted from 1997 to 1998. In 1999 VIZ Media released the first collected 2 volumed english Black Jack manga, but it only had altogether 17 Black Jack chapters. Then Black Jack’s publishing rights were then transferred from VIZ Media to Vertical in 2008. Vertical released the Black Jack Preview manga in 2008 it had only one chapter in it titled The First Storm (the 167th Black Jack chapter in chronological order the 2nd chapter in Tezuka’s order). Vertical then released Black Jack into 3 limited edition collected hardcover volumes that had 1 sealed Black Jack chapter inside each volume, also the 3rd limited edition volume had a afterwords that talked about the 3 sealed Black Jack chapters, Osamu Tezuka’s Star System, and the Dark Horse Publishing Co. racism notes featured in Dark Horse’s english publications of Osamu Tezuka’s manga, the Black Jack limited edition were released sometime in 2008. The three hardcover volume were limited to having only 1,500 copies for the first volume the other hardcover volumes only had 1,200 copies each. After that Vertical released Black Jack chapters in the order that Osamu Tezuka wanted Black Jack to be released in (kind of randomly), Vertical released Black Jack in 17 collected volumes starting with vol.1 in September 2008 and ending with vol.17 in November 2011. The 5th Black Jack volume is right now the only republished Black Jack volume by Vertical (not counting the limited edition volumes or online volumes as reprints).
