Buddha Hardbacks

Does anyone else's volume 7 spine artwork not quite line up with the others? It's my one tiny nitpick with a wonderful set of books. I was just wondering if it affected every copy or I was just unlucky. If it's the latter one day when I can afford it (Alas I have still not won the lottery) I'll replace my volume 7!

I checked just to make sure, but yeah... mine's the same. As soon as I read your post, I knew what you were talking about. It's been bugging me ever since I got the final volume and saw the whole mural together.

It appears that the problem is with the cut of the cover... it sits slightly (about 50mm) lower than the rest of the covers. If you propped it up on... a CD jewlebox maybe, it'd line up better, but then you'd have one volume sitting higher than the rest.

Still... it's not a huge issue. And having some experience in printing, I know that sometimes the cut can be the trickiest part. So I chalk it up as "an honest mistake". It still bothers me less than Viz's Maison Ikkoku Vol. 3 - they screwed up the font size on the spine, so it looks funny sitting next to all the other volumes. THAT one is a preventable error... but someone just wasn't paying attention. Grrrrr...

Also keep in mind that pressing plants set parameters regarding how far print can be off before it is considered 'bad'. More than likely Vertical wasn't thrilled with volume 7's spine either, but I think print can typically be off as much as an 8th of an inch before pressing plants have to rerun a print job. Though that's with the offset printing I do, not sure how it is for books.

My vol 7 also doesn't line up quite. That's why a lot of companies don't try to do connected pictures on the spines, it is very hard to get right. Still, I'm glad they went for it. Buddha is definitely the best-looking part of my Tezuka wall.

Buddha is most definitely on my list of titles I want to get. Even if the spines don't quite match up evenly I hope I can get them some day.
Does the picture look pretty okay from a distance Ada? Can one of you describe what sort of picture it is to me please?

This image is from the UK softcover release, but it's the same image that Vertical used on the North America HC release:
