Uran

Also known as ウラン (Uran)

Status: Primary Star (★★★)

Uran is Astro Boy‘s tomboy-ish younger sister.  She was created by Dr. Ochanomizu, along with Astro’s Father, his mother Mitchy, and his older brother Cobalt, in order to give Astro a more realistic childhood.  However, because she was made by Dr. Ochanomizu and not Dr. Tenma, she is not nearly as sophisticated as her older brother and lacks his special powers.  However,  her jealousy of Astro and desire to prove herself sometimes leads to her disguising herself as her brother in order to have adventures of her own… usually with unfortunate results.

Uran is first and foremost one of the more memorable members the Astro Boy (1952-68) supporting cast – often stealing the spotlight from the rest.  Although her debut was originally the at the very end of the chapter “The Invisible Giant” (1960), it was editted out when the story was collected into book-form.  So – much to her chagrin that no one seems to remember that fact! – her official debut is attributed to the chapter “Uran” (1960) instead.  While she has also made a couple of appearances in Black Jack (1973-83) as well, she is never far from her tomboy roots.  In fact, in the chapter “Money! Money! Money! (1976), Dr. Tenma (somewhat appropriately playing her father) mistakenly blurts out “Uran” instead of his daughter’s correct name “Kasumi”.

Hello, My Name (in English) is…

As Astro (aka “Atom”) Boy’s sister, it should come as no surprise that Uran’s name is based on the English word “uranium”.

Distinguishing Features

Despite her strong family resemblance to Astro Boy, you can spot Uran by the two upturned, horn-shaped ends of her hair style – quite different from Astro and Cobalt‘s famous “double triangle” hair style.
