In Japanese, deko means forehead. So, by elongating the “o” sound and ending with “n”, Osamu Tezuka makes is make it sound like a big protruding forehead.

Distinguishing Features

Unassuming with his short, small frame, he is remarkable for his large, protruding forehead, white whispy hair, and tiny spectacles.

Status: Minor Star (★)

Another of Tezuka’s scientists – in many ways similar to Dr. Hanamaru.  Dr. Dekon’s kindly appearance belies his sharp intellect and iron will.  Usually cast as a scientist or doctor, on occaision he has taken on other authority figure roles, such as a chief administrator, a teacher or someone’s father.

Notable Roles

Although he first appeared as the undercover government agent, Dr. Dekon in Mr. Cactus (1951-53), he also appeared in several other series, including a memorable role as Jiro’s father in Astro Boy (1952-68).
