Depha

Also known as デーパ (Depa)

Hello, My Name (in English) is…

As a fictional character in the semi-biographical Buddha (1972-83) series, Depha’s name has not particular meaning.

Distinguishing Features

WIth his cue-ball head and burned out eye-socket, Depha makes a striking figure

Status: Minor Star (★)

As a samanna (a non-Brahmin monk), Depha subscribes to the philosophy that human beings were meant to suffer – even going so far as to burn out his own eyes to prove the point. Simply put, he has an extremely serious and stoic personality. He is as straight-laced as they come, and is completely inflexible in his thinking.

Notable Roles

Depha is squarely a part of the Buddha (1972-83) cast. He is memorable as a monk who is more or less the polar opposite to the Buddha. Although at first he befriends him, the two part ways when the Buddha chooses a different path from the human suffering that Depha subscribes to. Despite ridiculing the teachings of the Buddha – and even attempting to kill him – after the Buddha saves Depha’s life, he becomes one of his most loyal disciples.

Besides his main role in Buddha (1972-83), Depha has also made a single appearance in Black Jack (1973-83).
