Astro Boy (1952-68)

Shonen
October 1959

One of Osamu Tezuka’s longest-running manga serials, Astro Boy (1952-68) followed directly on the heels of the moderately successful Ambassador Atom (1951-52) in the pages of Shonen (少年), published by Kobunsha. It began monthly serialization in April 1952 and would continue for the next 16 years, until March 1968.

In addition to the 50 chapters serialized over the course of the regular monthly feature, complete stories were also published in eight supplemental inserts (smaller, separate magazines that were packaged and sold together with the regular publication) as well as six (usually seasonal) special editions – bringing the grand total to 64 chapters.

One of Osamu Tezuka’s most successful creations, Astro Boy has been featured in several publications. The Astro Boy manga has also been serialized in the Sankei Newspaper, Mighty Atom Club, Second-Grader, as well as several one-shots and other specials.

Sea Serpent Island (海蛇島)
Shonen (少年)
1953/08 (Summer Vacation Supplemental Insert)

While swimming in the sea with Tamao, Astro Boy finds several messages-in-a-bottle, each containing a letter begging for help from a young girl on an island called Pochom-Pochom. Deciding to investigate, Astro flies off again and again each night, illegally leaving Japan, and runs across a mysterious sea serpent which, much to Astro’s surprise, turns out to be a large mechanical construct. He is taken captive and sent to an underwater uranium mining camp. There he meets an old man who has been working as a slave for ten years, as well as his daughter Rumiko, the source of the letters. After battling, and destroying the sea serpent robot, Astro frees Rumiko and her father and deposits them on a neighbouring island. However things don’t quite go as planned and Astro’s head is lopped off by one of the native women. Not realizing he was a robot, Rumiko faints in grief, and Astro Boy, sadly, decides against telling her the truth so as to shield from the possible consequences of a robot leaving Japan without permission.

In the Astro Boy chapter “Sea Serpent Island” (1953), Kerrigan appears as a slave held in a base at the bottom of the ocean. However, when this chapter was first printed in “Shōnen” magazine, this slave role was played by Kerrigan’s younger brother, who looked exactly like Hige Oyaji. Later, when this chapter was published in a tankōbon (standalone book), this role was played by Kerrigan instead, and the casting of Hige Oyaji as Kerrigan’s younger brother was removed from the story.

Hoping to assemble and sell their illegal robots at great profit they are now collecting the components, but when a priest at one of the churches recognizes the company president, he instructs the priest to bind the eyes of a plaster statue of Jesus before locking him in a side room. Although the perpetrators make off with their prize, the priest is shot and killed in the getaway. Investigating the incident, Moustachio is captured by the crooks and nearly killed by the now-assembled and out of control killer robot before Astro intervenes and saves him. Mr. Mustachio is accosted by a man on a train who gives him a pendant shaped just like a valentine heart. He implores Mustachio to keep it hidden and to watch out for the Egyptian Conspirators. Jumping off the train the man is attacked and killed. Upon finding out he doesn’t have the pendant the conspirators check the train and notice the pendant protruding from Mustachio’s pocket. He fights them inside and on top of the train and is finally captured but Astro appears in time to save him.Later Mustachio shows the pendant to Astro, Professor Ochanomizu and Inspector Nakamura of the police. The professor recognizes the pendant as the one that had belonged to the Egyptian Queen Cleopatra over 2000 years ago. He says as crazy as it sounds there’s a woman in Egypt who claims to be Cleopatra resurrected and she’s built some evil secret society to help her re-claim her ancient empire. He instructs Astro to conceal the pendant inside his chest compartment while they investigate the activities of the society. In reality the new Queen Cleopatra is a robot created by the leader of the Egyptian Conspirators, Dr. Baribari. Her master sends her along with four giant robot warriors to recover the pendant from Astro at any cost to validate her claims in the eyes of the people of Egypt. Astro is nearly destroyed in the fight although he defeats three of the warriors. He is rescued by a mysterious man wearing a mask-like hat obscuring his face. He protects Astro and repairs him but Dr. Baribari manages to abduct Astro. Astro puts up a good struggle but is knocked out. However Baribari’s henchmen are terrified to open Astro’s chest because there’s a note written on the partition saying he is rigged to explode if tampered with. Baribari is outraged and orders his men to take Astro to Egypt where they can assess their problem at leisure.Baribari orders Cleopatra to kill the strange man who helped Astro but he outsmarts and stuns her. He turns out to be Astro’s creator, Dr. Tenma and he removes the apparatus attached to her electronic brain which Baribari uses to send her commands. Tenma assures Cleopatra it’s right to disobey her creator when she can tell what he says is wrong and she takes Tenma to Egypt with her via the rocket jets in her last remaining giant warrior. They discover Astro a helpless prisoner of the conspirators.Tenma is also captured and Cleopatra is blasted when she protests. Baribari intends to combine his Cleopatra and Tenma’s Astro into one powerful robot but Tenma manages to spray his captors with sneezing gas inside the buttons of his jacket. His own hat mask protects him from the gas and while everybody is disabled he breaks free and borrows some of Cleopatra’s energy to revive Astro. Just as Tenma finishes the giant warrior seizes him and Astro wakes up just in time to save him. Astro flies off with the inactive Cleopatra and the warrior flies after him. In the fight Astro is smashed into the temple wall and buried behind the giant’s body with only the bottom half sticking out.Meanwhile Cleopatra is sent flying outside in the midst of the population. When they realize that they’ve been tricked by Baribari they riot against him, bash him half to death and charge into the temple shooting and smashing everything up.In desperation Baribari picks himself up and drags Cleopatra into his secret laboratory while the rioting is taking place. He repairs her, dresses her in her royal robes and commands her to silence the people and persuade them she is a true human. However Cleopatra turns against her master and imprisons him inside a sarcophagus in her arms with a time bomb set to explode and bury them in rubble in one minute.Astro has survived a punches his way out of the wall through the giant’s torso. Tenma has also managed to keep out of the line of fire and informs Astro that the Egyptian Conspiracy has been wiped out and Cleopatra has perished along with her creator. Tenma refuses to unmask himself or even tell Astro who he is. Astro flies off home to Japan strongly suspecting that the mysterious man is his creator while Tenma wishes him all the very best and urges him to keep fighting for the good of all humans worldwide.

The basic premise is that a machine that gives off light and heat just like the sun was invented by Professor Ochanomizu for assistance in mining and developing on places such as the far-distant Pluto, but it has been stolen by terrible criminals who are killing and terrorizing people with its power. A British Intelligence detective known as Sherlock Holmspun has been sent to investigate and Astro is to assist him. Mr. Holmspun hates robots however though he begrudgingly agrees to take Astro with him.Holmspun is an extraordinary man. He was seriously wounded by a bomb planted in his car and needed to have his limbs and torso amputated and replaced with artificial metal parts. He has the appearance of a robot but his head is the only flesh and blood part of his body and thus is his link to his humanity. He is very arrogant and mean to Astro but Astro is kind and caring in return and helps Mr. Holmspun who slowly begins to mellow towards Astro. Together they discover that the leader of the criminals they are seeking is none other than Kim Sankaku, who obviously somehow managed to escape when his submarine exploded near Crucifix Island in the first story of this volume. Even though they destroy the artificial sun and capture Sankaku tragically he shoots Mr. Holmspun in the head thereby killing him.In the epilogue it is revealed that the surgeons have given Holmspun an artificial head, thus he has now become a complete robot himself. Holmspun declares that Astro made him see that unlike many selfish humans, robots always endeavour to uphold justice and help others. He is so very proud to have become a robot.

A fireball, which looks like the sun, attacks various places one after another in the northern Pacific. ICPO (Interpol: International Criminal Police Organization) invites Sherlock Homespun from the British military intelligence to ask him to investigate the incidents together with Astro Boy. But Homespun abhors robots. In the meantime, while Astro Boy is following the strange movements of Dr. Ochanomizu, he encounters the fireball in question on the sea, which turns out to be a huge artificial sun ball.

Earth is under alien invasion. The first strange thing is that a mysterious blanket of snow falls upon Tokyo that sucks up all the energy of robots causing them to break down. Only Astro seems to be unaffected, apparently because he has far more energy than most robots, though he is very upset that his mother and father are among those put out of commission. But next an alien humanoid shows up with a powerful creature that looks just like a leopard but it sucks up energy like the snow.By sheer good fortune Astro is able to fight off the leopard. The alien takes Mr. Mustachio prisoner to use as a hostage. Astro is finally able to rescue him with the help of several other robots and Professor Ochanomizu. He instructs the Ministry of Science to build Astro and all the other robots into one huge robot body so that not even the leopard can drain all their energy combined. In the course of his escape Mustachio discovered the leopard’s weakness. It can only absorb artificial energy so Astro and his friends drag it into the middle of a thundercloud. The lightning takes all the fight out of the leopard. When the alien sees this he sends word back to his home planet that their invasion has failed and he self-destructs his spaceship. The leopard and all the snow dissolve into nothing.

One day, snow that absorbs all kinds of energy suddenly falls from the sky. Astro Boy, whose energy is far stronger than that of the others, barely manages not to run out of his energy. In front of him, however, a monstrous leopard with six legs and an enigmatic man appear. As it turns out they are amoeba-like space creatures that can change their shapes freely. The creatures would suck up even Astro Boy’s energy if he confronted them openly. In the meantime, a gigantic robot that has never been seen before appears to fight against the space leopard. The gigantic robot never collapses no matter how much its energy is sucked. What is the real identity of the robot?

A desperately scared scientist, Dr. Woods, has hired some gangsters to destroy the new 3D TV operating inside the local television station’s headquarters. A giant ghost is appearing through the waves emitted by the device and killing people by suffocating them. Dr. Woods is scared that this ghost will want to kill him too specifically. The gangsters infiltrate the station and blast the set to pieces with guns. But the big boss, Mr. Nada demands that Dr. Woods explain what this was all about. The doctor refuses but Nada has him tied up and whipped until he agrees to talk. The ghost is actually Dr. Wood’s former assistant, Hanabusa. The two of them had been experimenting with devices meant to transport things electronically from one place to another. Woods had given up in despair, but Hanabusa swore that one day he would succeed by himself. Three years later Woods received a phone call from Hanabusa to say he’d built an excellent matter transporter and prepared to deliver some things over to the receiver that was still standing there at Woods’ own end. A fish, a rabbit, a robot and finally Hanabusa himself. Woods was so deeply jealous at being humiliated by his former assistant that he blew up the receiving machine stranding Hanabusa in space. 3D TV’s are very similar to the concept of a matter transporter but much simpler so he is not able to assume his normal form. Nada hears about a second 3D TV owned by a family and determines to steal it so he can summon Hanabusa.Astro happens to know the family since the son is one of his classmates, Shibugaki. Previously he had seen Hanabusa appear while Shib was trying to demonstrate the TV to him and had fought the spectre off. The gangsters steal the machine while he is trying to investigate further disguised as an electrical repairman. They escape in a helicopter while Astro is fighting a big robot they used to aid them. After dispatching the robot Astro tracks them down by picking up the helicopter with his amplified hearing and arrives just in time to rescue dr. Woods from Hanabusa. Having summoned him Nada has promised to help him return to normal in return for a few small favours and one of them is to dispose of Woods but Astro flies away with woods to his home. Woods confesses to Astro and Astro goes to search Hanabusa’s home for the blueprints to the machine he’d built. He finds them and gives them to Professor Ochanomizu.Meanwhile Nada is using Hanabusa to commit murders as part of his criminal schemes to get rich. The police raid his hideout and are threatened by Hanabusa but Astro saves them by smashing the TV. However he realizes that in doing so he has destroyed the evidence and Inspector Tawashi is outraged.Astro goes to Ochanomizu’s lab for comfort but finds that Nada and his men have knocked out the Professor and those who were assisting him to build a matter transporter based off the blueprints. They warn Astro that they will kill Ochanomizu if he interferes and Nada tries to summon Hanabusa once more. However Hanabusa appears in human form though his molecules have been permanently combined with those of the fish, rabbit and robot he had tried to transport in addition to himself. He deeply regrets the killings he committed while he was in gaseous form. He was a complete monster and he helps Astro to overpower and knock out Nada and his men. Afterwards he uses the machine to transport himself to a far distant planet to live taking the blueprints and instructing Astro to smash the machine to bits. Astro does so and though Ochanomizu is at first angry when he comes to, he thanks Astro for preventing the villains from stealing it. Nada and his men are all sent to jail.

One day, a transparent monster comes out of a home 3D TV set, causing a great deal of confusion. The monster is actually the scientist Dr. Hanabusa. When he was conducting an experiment with his machine to transmit materials electrically, someone broke it, prohibiting Hanabusa from going back to his original body. Hanabusa was trying to transmit his own body to the place of Dr. Woods when the latter broke it because he was jealous of the machine’s capacity. Hanabusa’s body has got mixed up with a fish-and-rabbit-shaped robot, which he tried to transmit with his own body, becoming a monster devoid of reason.

Professor Amagawa feels that Garon is an important scientific discovery and leaves vowing that he shall find a way to claim ownership of Garon soon.To further complicate their troubles that night a big storm brews and Garon is blasted by very heavy lightning activating him. Astro fights him as he goes on a rampage, but Garon is too powerful and gets away leaving poor Astro weak and drained of energy. Professor Amagawa later discovers Garon wounded in the face by an army missile and tells him he’ll repair the damage if Garon will go with him and be his servant. Garon agrees and is smuggled away in a huge truck.Later Amagawa and a research team fly Garon to a remote uninhabited island in the South Pacific. Amagawa commands Garon to modify the land there so that it looks exactly like the planet on which he was created. Garon complies but before anybody realizes what is happening he also modifies the atmosphere to that of his own planet. By the time they run a test on the readings of the air there is hardly any oxygen having been replaced with nitrogen and ammonia. Before Amagawa can do anything he and all his men are choked by the noxious gas and collapse dead. But Garon keeps generating the modified air which spreads over the Pacific wiping out whole communities on other islands and all the passengers and crew of one unfortunate boat. Not to mention all the birds.Astro is sent to investigate before major areas of the world are overcome and he discovers Amagawa’s dead body and then Garon. Things look very bad but Astro has an idea to trick Garon. He tells him that he’s done a good job of modifying the island to look like his planet. But there’s one thing he’s overlooked. The gravity. All he needs to do is modify the gravity in one single space for exactly one minute. No more and no less to make his modifications complete.Garon falls for Astro’s ploy and concentrates for one minute. Fortunately the gravity on Garon’s planet is less than that of earth and all the poison air rises like a typhoon sucking Garon up into the stratosphere and into outer space unable to return while Astro holds onto a tree. After the gravity returns to normal Astro reports back to Ochanomizu with the news of his triumph. Ochanomizu is so proud of Astro and says that brains really do win over brawn finally.

A corrupt, greedy sultan called Chochi Chochi Ababa the Third has been overthrown and exiled by his angry subjects. In quest of revenge the Sultan hires a hooded character by the name of Doctor Abullah to create an enormous robot warrior. Sultan’s maniacal ambition grows not only to reclaim his country, but to be master of the entire world. So he christens his giant warrior Pluto and assigns him the task of destroying seven of the world’s most powerful robots to prove nobody can resist him.Astroboy of Japan is one of the seven and as he tries to find a way he can defeat Pluto the other six targets: Mont Blanc of Switzerland, North #2 of Northern Scotland, Brando of Turkey, Gerhardt from Germany, Hercules of Greece and Epsilon of Australia are all taken out one by one. Professor Ochanomizu strictly orders Astro not to fight Pluto and refuses to modify his robot body so that his strength can be increased to match Pluto.Ochanomizu is able to locate the Sultan’s secret location and flies his own private plane to confront him and make accusation. Naturally Sultan and Doctor Abullah take him prisoner as bait for Astro, who unbeknown to the Professor followed him. Astro and Pluto fight but Pluto defies his master’s orders and flies away with Astro caught inside his hand to a secluded area where he lets him go. Pluto says he hasn’t forgotten how Astro had previously saved his life on one occasion. Pluto had abducted Uran so that Astro would come to save her but before they could fight then Brando suddenly appeared demanding Pluto fight him first. Brando was a friend of one of Pluto’s earlier victims Mont Blanc. Pluto agrees and destroys Brando, but is almost destroyed himself. Astro helped him by pushing a button on his chest to alert his master to rescue him. So just this once Pluto spares Astro’s life in repayment. Pluto promises to take responsibility for Ochanomizu’s safety until their final showdown.Sultan is not pleased at all when Pluto does this and his temper is further fired when he receives word from a mysterious masked stranger named Doctor Goji. Goji has built another huge robot fighter called Bora. Goji claims that Bora is in fact twice as powerful as Pluto and that he must challenge and defeat Bora to be truly the greatest robot on earth. Sultan is furious and vows that nothing will interfere with his plans to conquer the world.Eventually Astro and Pluto meet on the crater of an active volcano. Sultan is there with the Professor as his hostage. Doctor Goji appears with Bora and reveals himself as Doctor Abullah. He had built Pluto for Sultan but was secretly building Bora in a hidden place. If Pluto defeats Astro he has to fight Bora.Astro and Pluto commence their combat but as they fight the volcano begins to erupt. Ochanomizu tells Astro he must plug up the crater with boulders or else all the nearby township communities will be wiped out. At first Pluto sits by and watches Astro struggle to stop the volcano but then he decides he must help and together they co-operate in sealing it up before it’s too late. Pluto refuses to destroy Astro because he realizes what a fine robot he is and that he would be ashamed to fight him. Doctor Goji insists that Pluto still fight Bora and Pluto accepts on his honour. Astro tries to help him but both Pluto and Bora are destroyed.Goji reveals himself to be be a robot. He used to be the Sultan’s servant. When he heard his old master wanted to build the greatest robot on earth he became a roboticist and built Pluto for him. But when Sultan started using Pluto to destroy other robots he built Bora to teach him how stupid and twisted his lust for power really was. The Sultan promises never to make any more robots like Pluto and departs with his servant. Astro is very sad and hopes that someday robots will all become friends and not destroy each other anymore.re toThis adventure was adapted in episodes 23 and 24 of the 1980’s English dub entitled The Greatest Robot in the World Parts 1 and 2. These were in turn remade for The Rise of Pluto and The Fall of Acheron for the 2003 series.

Once again earth is threatened by alien invasion. Professor Ochanomizu has discovered information from a secret source that the invaders are called roboids. They physically resemble robots but they’re not true robots. There are five of them involved and they are planning to annihilate the human race via infiltration of earth’s robot population. The professor has recruited four of the world’s major robot secret agents: Zair-A, Box, Dop OO and Cyrano to assist Astro in the mission to defeat the roboids. Five robots against five roboids. An even match.During the course of their battles Astro learns that the roboids come from a far distant star where all the human being become extinct hundreds of years ago leaving behind only the robots they had built. The robots kept building new robots and slowly evolved into beings that were born and died just like humans and even developed male and female genders and could give birth to children. Then some roboid scientists wanted to claim earth’s resources so an invasion force travelled in a spaceship disguised as a meteor. They crashed into the sea, burrowed down into the earth and lay hidden to orchestrate their plans. Eventually Astro and his companions are able to destroy all five roboids, however the cost is very high. Cyrano, Box, Dop OO and Zair-A are also destroyed one by one. Astro is the only survivor of the robot team.Furthermore there are actually more roboids on earth. There is a chief commander who the other roboids answered to and he also has his wife and their young son, Lolo, living safely underground while they fight the war above. Lolo actually tricks Astro into stepping onto the transporter device sending him to his playroom deep underground because he explains he’s lonely. When Lolo’s dad finds Astro he challenges him to duel up above, even though Lolo protests that he wants Astro to be his friend. As they prepare to fight Lolo’s mum suddenly appears and cries out that Lolo has run away. She shows her husband a note that says Lolo can’t stand it anymore. Dad promised to show him many interesting things when they came to earth but he’s never taken him to the surface so much as once. The last straw was just when he made friends with Astro dad drove him away. So he’s gone to the surface by himself. The commander reluctantly agrees to send Astro to bring Lolo back when he swears that robots never lie and by his honour he can be trusted. He realizes that Lolo has broken into military grounds and rescues him from the automatically activated guns and bombs triggered off by intruders but he is broken in the process. When he lands on the ground outside the complex he is still and lifeless. Lolo’s dad appears and begs his son’s forgiveness for neglecting him. He tells him they’re going home and his mother is waiting for them. He assures Lolo that Astro can easily be repaired and sends Lolo back underground via the transporter. Then he repairs Astro himself. Shortly after Astro awakens the spaceship takes off on automatic pilot. He explains to Astro that he has sent his wife and son back to their own planet but he has stayed behind to finish their duel. It’s for the sake of honour. His troops have been destroyed and his conquest thwarted but he must fight to the end. Astro is compelled to attack but the commander deliberately blows himself up during the initial attack. He really was grateful to Astro for saving Lolo and had no desire to destroy him.Astro realizes that this must have been his intention all along to send his family home and lay down his life in battle. He hopes with all his heart that if Lolo ever returns to earth when he grows up that they will be able to be true friends and have no reason at all to fight such a senseless battle.

The 100 Million Year-Old Crime (一億年前の犯罪)

There are two interwoven plots in this story.First Astro is assigned to the task of capturing five juvenile delinquents in France who possess dangerous psychic powers. They all combine their power to create a devastatingly strong force that helplessly controls and manipulates people to do anything they want. Furthermore they don’t care who they have to hurt to achieve their goals. In fact they take immense pleasure in it. They break into a military complex and steal a huge robotic tank known as the Karabusu and wreak havoc and destruction upon the nearby communities. When Professor Ochanomizu brings Astro all the way from Japan by special request the boys manage to capture him to use as a hostage. They threaten to put a bullet through his big nose if Astro interferes with their plans. They intend to use the Karabusu to demolish Paris, London, New York, Moscow, Tokyo and other major cities of the world just for fun and enjoyment. But Astro happens to come across two weird aliens whose bodies resemble pools of water. They can take on a humanoid form but their bodies are pure liquid and they generally revert to puddles when they move about and carry things slithering along. They are a young female named Parma and her father, whose name is never revealed. He explains to Astro that he first visited the earth 100 million years ago as a research biologist. at one time he decided to modify one of the animals and taught the ape how to walk, talk and use fire. This was very wrong as species modification is highly illegal under universe law and even worse he left the modified ape on earth where it quickly evolved into the modern human being and began abusing other species with fire and finally corrupted the planet even waging war and killing each other. This therefore was his crime, the 100 million year old crime of the story title, and so he has returned bringing his dear daughter Parma to exterminate all humans and put things right again.Astro tries to negotiate with him and he does agree to a term of testing. If Astro will capture and deliver those five youths over to him for one year he will see if they can be rehabilitated. With the help of the alien Astro succeeds in rescuing Ochanomizu and the boys are all taken away. Ochanomizu was knocked unconscious and only first hears about the situation in secret from Astro in the hospital. He is very worried because he can’t see the boys reforming in one year and the alien refuses to speak with him. He will only see Astro.Astro goes to check on progress in three months. The boys are going crazy caged up in a huge bubble with nothing to do all the time. Parma is feeling rather sorry for them but her father insists on keeping them for the full year. He has a device that if turned on will emit powerful rays making all humans everywhere kill themselves. If the boys are reformed after a year the human race will be spared for their sake. The boys beg Astro to set them free and he can sense that they truly are no longer bad humans. So he smashes the bubble and tries to sneak them out. However as they pass the aliens spaceship the boys suddenly charge at it. They jump inside and smash it up until it explodes causing the underground cave to collapse burying everything. Astro protects and shelters Parma inside his body from the falling debris while her father slithers up to the surface with the extermination device. Before he can activate it he is actually drunk alive by a herd of extremely thirsty cows. Astro digs his way out of the ground and finds the device permanently deactivating it.He reports back to Ochanomizu at the hospital that the boys are all dead and so are the aliens. But Parma was saved by Astro. While he and the Professor fly back to Japan he produces her inside a sealed jar. Astro explains that she wants to stay on earth since she has no way of going home. So Astro unscrews the lid and dumps the jar out of the plane over the ocean where she’ll be able to live out the rest of her days in peaceful solitude.
