Faust (Manga)

Tezuka's Faust (1950) was originally published as a stand-alone book by Fuji Shobo on Januauary 15, 1950.  An adaptation of Goethe's Faust, it is Tezuka's first foray into re-imagining classic literature as manga.

Lost World (Manga)

Lost World (1948), the opening act in Osamu Tezuka's early "science-fiction trilogy", was originally published by Fuji Shobo as as a book-length adventure split into two parts. Both Volume 1 (subtitled "The Earth") and Volume 2 (subtitled "The Universe") both hit the shelves at the same time on December 20, 1948.

Metropolis (Manga)

Metropolis (1949), one third of Osamu Tezuka's early "science-fiction trilogy", was originally published as a stand-alone, book-length adventure by Ikuei Publishing on September 15, 1949.

Pinocchio (Manga)

Heavily inspired by Walt Disney’s animated classic, Osamu Tezuka’s take on the tale of a wooden puppet who becomes a real boy Pinocchio (1952) was originally published as a stand-alone book by Tokodo on June 5, 1952.

Pippy (Manga)

Tezuka’s undersea adventure, Pippy (1951-53) was originally serialized in Shuiesha’s Fun Book from December 1951 to May 1953, with a one-off Pippy side-story, “Pippy’s Adventure”, appearing in an Fun Book “Special Issue” in August 1952.

Cactus Kid, The (Manga)

Also sometimes referred to as Milkhall Territory, Osamu Tezuka’s cowboy adventure, Mr. Cactus (1951-54) was originally published over 23 monthly instalments in Shonen Illustrated from April 1951 to March 1953. It was followed by Cyrano the Hero (1953) from April to November 1953, before resuming for another 12 monthly instalments from December 1953 to December 1954.

Age of Adventure (Manga)

The Age of Adventure, also known as "West Rush", was originally published in Akita Shoten's monthly Adventure King from January 1951 to August 1953. It is partially based on Tezuka's earlier amateur work, Old Man's Treasure Island from 1945.

Phoenix [Manga Shonen] (Manga)

The earliest incarnation of what would eventually become Tezuka's epic masterpiece, Phoenix [Manga Shonen] (1954-55) was Tezuka's follow-up series to the popular Jungle Emperor (1950-54) in Manga Shonen.
