Animation and rarities (was 'other hobbies')

I deeply enjoy Matsumoto's Arcadia of my youth, but can't find anything else here in the US I've really appreciated much (newer works by him seem to just tread the same old ground), that and Galaxy express 999 is out of print (I've never seen it, but heard it is his masterpiece.)

Is there anime/manga you'd recommend to someone who enjoys Arcadia of my youth?

Arcadia of My Youth is a masterpiece. You may also like its sequel "Waga Seishun no Arcadia, Mugen Kido ssx" (Albator 84 in French) but I don't know if it's available in English.

I don't know if you've already seen Space Pirate Captain Herlock, the endless Odyssey. It's the last series involving Harlock and it's much better than Cosmowarrior Zero or Gun Frontier. However it's very dark too.

I'm not so keen on Galaxy Express since the rhythm is too slow. However the films are very good.

Finally his most recent series "The Galxy Railways" is worth too. Actually, it's one of my favourites

Looking around on the internet is seems the availability of most of these is pathetic. I saw some of one that was tied into Wagner's Ring cycle...that one was OK, but not nearly as good as Arcadia.

Then there has been a newer release where they can't seem to spell Harlock's name right (he is continually referred to as 'herlock':

The old Starblazer episodes are out, but I've been recommended against those. I have heard of Albator before and also Galaxy express 999 is always recommended (again, the anime)...but neither are available.

I'll look into Galaxy Railways at some point. I always find it interesting that we have that fairly literal adaptation of Miyazawa's 'night on the galactic railroad' (also goes under some other variations), then we have Leiji Matsumoto's take on it which is very different but still interesting (or so it seems from what I've been able to make of it.)

Also Gun Frontier has never been available here but I've played the video game of it (which has nothing to do with the manga/anime I'm afraid), but it's a fun game anyway...

Well, Harlock Saga (the OVA tied into Wagner's Ring cycle) isn't the best series involving Harlock ,it may be one of the worst, but the manga is much better. Unfortunately there is no end.

This anime is much better. This is "Herlock the Endless odyssey" Herlock or Harlock? Both are correct. Some Matsumoto fans say it's one of his best series , some others think Harlock is too cold and prefer older series. It's one of my favourite but I still prefer the first series Uchu Kaizoku Captain Harlock and the film Arcaia of my Youth.

I have seen Gun Frontier and I don't like it very much but I'm sure the anime is available in the US. It was released in America first. But the manga is different. I haven't read it but I've been told it was almost porn and that some scenes were really shocking.

Now I know why I never brought myself to watch something about Harlock. I never knew where to start and what to choose.

Maybe I'll read the manga in French once. Are there different versions too or just one?

My Youth in Arcadia seems to be about the best place to start...its a single movie, and it is extremely influential on other anime. I'd go so far as to say it is iconic! It is really a great film!
