Tezuka In English Discussion Forums

Testing our collective Tezuka knowledge, do you think between us we can identify every character in this group shot? I got a lot of them, but certainly not all.



Sorry I don't have a higher resolution copy - actually I do have one somewhere but can't find it.

In order to make it easier to point characters out, I've cut the picture into seven chunks. I'll list the ones I've spotted, then others can add their suggestions.

Section 1:


Ricky, Kenichi, someone, Captain Ken, Sasaki, others, at right Sharaku and Hyakkumaru.

Section 2:


Shumari (drinking), protagonist of Arabian Nights, others, below Buddha, Choppei, Tippei.

Section 3:


Kiriko, Tezuka, Mason, Duke Red, Boon, Inspector Geta, Rommel, Lamp, Ham Egg, Skunk, Ben Heck, Kin Sankaku, others.

Section 4:


Carrying Garon are Prince Norman, someone, Dororo, someone, someone, tink and someone. Phoenix above. Two men in the bottom middle are Kutter and someone. Bottom right Barbara, Melmo and Cleopatra.

Section 5:


Upper row Ochanomizu, Dr. Hanamaru, Buku Buck, Saruta, Butaru Makeru, Notaarin, Barbara is on the right drinking whisky. Lower row Rock, Pinoko, Melmo (child form) Uran, Astro, Ma-chan, two more kids.

Section 6:


Melmo (adult form), cleopatra, sapphire, Maria, lower row Shunsaku Ban, Triton, Saturn carrying Pippy and one other mermaid.

Section 7:


Budha, chippei (wolf form), Toppei (wolf form), rabbit from Amasing 3 (what's her name?) Hakkai and Goku riding Hakuryu, Hyoutantsugi, Mitchy (rabit from Nextworld), at the right Shunsaku Ban, Duck from Amasing 3, Kimba and Kimba's father and their bird friend (his name is different in different versions)


Also, is it just me, or is a certain doctor conspicuously missing?

Too small for my poor eyes, even if I recognized almost the same characters as you.

The rabbit in "W3" is Bokko, the duck Pukko and the horse Nokko.



I think the character in black at the right of Shumari is Gonhomatsu, the central protagonist of "Swallow The Earth". He is alcoholic in the manga so it would be logical, he lent his drink to Shumari on the picture.
The dog on the same picture is certainly Wansa, the protagonist of a TV series which was one of the last anime made by Mushi Productions. Osamu Tezuka was not very implied, he only created the general design of the character and wrote the basis of the story. And of course you forgot Magma and Akira Asagumo aka Big X at the top right of the large picture.



I think the child who is carrying Garon is not Dororo but Pook. Dororo is the one at the right of this picture.



At right of Sasaki, there is a little child I don't recognize, but at right of him, at left of Sharaku, I believe it's Hato. The stories in which Sasaki and Hato appear take place in the same feodal periods, then I think it's possible.

You're right, no trace of Black Jack. Important characters like Dr. Tenma or Don Dracula are missing too. A good computer-user must add them for the fun

Dororo and pook are both there - Dororo is to the left of the one with the tophat.

Most of the time Dororo hasn't ponytail.
Ponytail appears especially on color covers and promotionnal pictures.
In the manga he/she has these hairs almost systematically :

By "ponytail" I just meant the hairs coming off the back of his head - he always has those. I can't tell anymore which is him. The dark lines of Garon and the poofy pigtails standing in front of the other boy who could be Dororo conceal the back of his hair in one case and the front in the other. I'll try to get a better scan.

I don't know if you said this one

The guy carrying Garon in the right extreme (Tink-Someone, then he) is the protagonist of Tezuka's sexy/anti-fascist comedy Rally Up, Mankind!

Do you know his name?

Hmm... I think Black Jack is missing. I don't see him! I see Dr. Kiriko but not Dr. Black Jack!

*nods* I don't know enough characters to judge it, though.

It's very strange that Kiriko is there but not BJ.

I recognize a few more now, from Swallowing the Earth. No Zephyrus, though.
