F-Man, I agree re starting with the last half of the episodes not translated in the Korean version makes the most sense.

As to the external subs, I'm not sure how external subs are used (I take it you can use a combination of programs to reburn a DVD with external subs included [or play it with the subs on your computer]?), but I think it's a pretty cool idea. I do like supporting the company where I can (though to be fair I already own the retail US release and am almost there on getting a legit Korean one too for the first half of the eps lol). If they would have only done a non-bungled release along the way (and the US version I wouldn't argue is terrible, but not ideal either), I'd be more willing to buy another set retail. As is, I'm personally not opposed to a fansubbed video version (and I guess some video work might be done as well), though I do see your point.
