Pinoco stared at Sapphire's body for a moment, but was quickly snapped back to reality with her sensei's words. "...of course." She said in a hush. She had grown accustomed to strange cases...but each one amazed her like it was her first time.

She reached over with a cotton pad of alcohol, and paused, hovering her hand over the area for a moment before rubbing the patient's skin. She just had to be patient, and Sensei would explain everything in time...

Black Jack took a moment to examine Sapphire's chest and stomach. Like her arms and legs, blood vessels were clearly visible beneath the skin, giving it a sickly, blotchy look that looked all sorts of unhealthy. Her breathing was difficult and irregular, and upon feeling her chest he could feel a rapidly weakening heartbeat. No time to wait and theorize.

He extended his hand. "Scalpel."

The moment Black Jack spoke the cold metal of a scalpel met his gloved hand.

Black Jack decided to begin with the heart. He made his first incision just above Sapphire's sternum and made a single smooth incision all the way down his/her chest, slicing just deep enough to separate the dermal layer but leaving the next layers unharmed. But even as he made his next incisions to loosen the skin, his expert eyes noticed something: the incisions were already healing on its own.

What on earth is happening? Without waiting, he asked for a retractor and began pulling the skin back.

"Pinoco, get ready. I will have to work fast on this one."

But if (s)he was healing so fast, then why was (s)he on the verge of death?

Something deep inside made Sapphire's face and left shoulder twitch for a moment, as if the paralytic and anaesthetic were having trouble setting in completely enough to still the muscles.

OOC NOTE: I have sent details of the surgery's findings to Canti by PM and given him permission to conduct the operation.

Pinoco noticed Sapphire's facial spasms, "Sensei!" She looked to Sapphire's face, and hoped that Black Jack would notice, too.

Hoped, nothing. She knew he would!

"I see it!" he said, watching Sapphire's face out the corner of his eye. Was his/her regenerating ability affecting his/her body's ability to accept the anaesthesia, too? "Increase the dosage and keep applying anaesthesia every two to four minutes." Truly this would be a race against time. His cutting speed was godlike, but even gods have their limits...

He peeled the first layer of tissue back and quickly cut through the next, exposing one layer after another. But even as he reached the sternum, the heart monitor began emitting a protracted, singular peal. He looked up. A flat line scrawled across the screen.

"He's flatlining! Splitter!" he called for the powerful cutting tool used to split the sternum for open-heart surgery.

Pinoco gasped. This couldn't be happening. "GOT IT!" She jumped off of her stool and dug out the splitter. She held it up for Black Jack's command.

Black Jack took the splitter and clamped it around Sapphire's sternum. It made a familiar but sickening crunching noise as it bit through the cartilege and bone. Yet as soon as he had split the ribcage open, the heart monitor returned to a normal, steady "beep. beep. beep. beep."

What on earth? Did his heart just go into cardiac arrest and then come back again? What is going on?

He wasted no time and pried the ribcage apart to expose the patient's heart. He suctioned the excess blood out and took a survey of the situation. What he observed perplexed him. Clotted blood vessels were bursting and reforming right before his eyes, spurting blood into Sapphire's chest cavity and then closing back up again. He explored around the lungs and found bits of excess lung tissue and pockets of air around the lungs. Even as he observed all this, a tiny, nearly invisible hole opened in the lung's wall, and another near to it closed itself.

However, the clots continued forming and the heartbeats were already growing weaker and more irregular. How long had (s)he been like this?

Sapphire's eyelids twitched distinctly as the cartelige snapped, and his/her eyes seemed to track Black Jack's movements for a moment, almost as if awake, though no other movement was visible.

Black Jack's mind raced at light speed. The blood clotting was a symptom of a bad blood transfusion, but Sapphire's regeneration was healing him/her as fast as the reaction was killing him/her. The bursting lungs were trapping air pockets in his/her chest and causing pain, and he imagined similar things were happening all over his/her body. It was like the organs and tissues were dying and regenerating at the same time. His mind began recalling the events of his battles with the deadly Phoenix disease, and he began wondering if that beast had not yet been completely put to rest.

At any rate, (s)he needed a complete blood transfusion, and he didn't have enough with him for one. He could heal the symptoms now and at least put Sapphire in greater comfort until (s)he could get proper treatment, but taking him/her to a hospital was out of the question. His only options were to ask for blood donations from himself and the others, or close Sapphire up and move to the clinic. His/her tissues were already self-healing, and he would need to either reopen some of his incisions or close up and let them heal.

"Wato-san!" He called. "I need to know what blood types everyone has out there!"

"Blood types?" Wato shouted back. "I'm A+! How about you two?" She looked to lamp and Kenichi.

OOC: For those having trouble deciding their bloodtypes, roughly 65% of Japanese people are O+. Of the remainder, most are A+ or B+. AB is rare and RH- very rare.

"I will donate my blood!", yelled Kenichi.

Wato frowned at Kenichi. "Fine sentiment, but what's your blood type? If you're not compatible with Sapphire's then it doesn't do the doctor any good. What are you? A? B? O?"
