Actually as far as shounen manga goes... this shonen manga, it's the father of all shoune manga, the first one to create the formula so when it comes to being modern there is nothing like this: it's freaking avant-garde. Also it is the one story that set the standard for story structure in gaming industry: big boss ad the end of a level and big big boss at the end of all the levels. Btw the story continues after the manga as tezuka finally managed to finish it in animation form.
Also the reason why it does not feel tezuka like is because it was heavily inspired by sanpei shirato works.

I've been reading Sanpei Shirato's Kamui-den in French, and I see exactly what you mean. Dororo has always struck me as Tezuka's attempt to turn Gekiga back into Manga.

I have the Sasuke DVD sets; this stuff is really intense!

They are similar to DORORO in that both have bloody violence and child title characters, but Sasuke lacks the supernatural element. I think VEOH has some Italian dubbed episodes; I noted one upon googling 'sasuke.' Plus, its in color. 7 discs in 2 sets. I tried searching for information on the series, either manga or anime, but found little.

I had a friend who had tons of Japanese anime, mostly Tezuka's. He had so much he had only begun to watch one series when anther arrived in the mail.

Interesting post, Deda; I had not even thought about the choices for animating manga series. Yet, could it be that the all-ages content was assumed to have a larger audience than the intense ones that were inappropriate for children, & therefore was preferred over the Gekiga?
