Tezuka in Tatsumi's Drifting Life

Just a heads up that the massive 'A Drifting Life' (Yoshihiro Tatsumi's auto-biography as manga) depicts a number of his interactions with Tezuka, discussion of Tezuka's influence on manga (and Tatsumi), etc. It's a good read if you have an interest in the general development of manga, but maybe not so much if you are only interested in specific tezuka works.

Regardless, very cool to see Tezuka (as a college student) taking such an involvement in young (HS age) illustrators.

Something about the title alone (A Drifting Life) makes me want to read it actually... even if I have little to no information about Yoshihiro Tatsumi. Nice to know about the Tezuka connection though. How is it overall? Worth a look?

I have seen this brick of a book on the shelf at the comics store and have been tempted to pick it up. Guess I have a valid reason to now.

this book is so great it is an instant classic. I have read it three times already. it is a big book but totally worth it. tezuka makes several cameos and anyone who is interested in classic manga will love this.

i recommend it 500%

I think this is my next manga. Gekiga, in general, seems pretty awesome.

I must admit that even after reading Drifting Life I'm not 100% certain what Gekiga is, but this may be due to not being as well versed in manga as I should be. There is some insight into this in Drifting Life where Tatsumi's brother accuses some of his comics of not being manga, but a more detailed distinction of how Gekiga is distinct.

I stumbled across "A Drifting Life" in my university library (while I was looking for reference material for my real schoolwork!) and I snatched it right away. I never got around to buying this book, but now that I've started reading it I'm seriously considering it. I've read some of the interactions with Tezuka before, however from the vantage point of Tezuka's biography. Getting a first-hand account from someone who was a huge fan who actually got to meet him in his prime... very cool.

I'm only 100 pages in and hooked already.
