When comic fans recognize that Alan Moore was not the first person to write a thoughtful and deep graphic novel, maybe I'll by into people being informed, but I've really seen no evidence that people have any sense of who Tezuka is.

I was talking with a friend of mine from Japan yesterday who is a Tezuka fan and who grew up with his work, and easily brought up pieces she hadn't heard of. It only illustrates how far one really has to go to 'know' Tezuka.

Just having heard of Astroboy or watching the Metropolis movie is hardly being informed about Tezuka.

I'm not trying to sound elitist, but most comic/anime fans fit the qualifications above, and that's ALL they know. Long, long ways from getting Tezuka (or having even the tiniest awareness of his catalog.)

I've personally run 6 anime trivia contests at cons and always have a few Tezuka questoins. If you ask "Osamu Tezuka, founder of Anime, created this influential robot series" they'll usually get "Astro Boy" but if you ask "Astro Boy was created by this mangaka" they won't get it most of the time. Sadness.

I agree. The only thng people can say is, "Oh, he made Astro Boy, right?" Although his style can tend to be a bit cartoony, it is the first anime so he needs a break.

He's a genius! I can't name any other person who can do the same as him. No one can, at least, truly imitate him. He started everything! As I always say, "The original is always the best!" and Tezuka helps me prove that statement.

No, Astro Boy is not the first anime.

Otogi Manga Calender was the first episodic anime series on television. It bears no resembalance to later anime.

Not THIS argument again. Astro Boy was the first anime by the defenition of anime used by the Japanese legal board of cultural arts, which specifies a serialized, animated TV series with a contiguous plot. And even if you want to bicker, the first Japanese animation was several movies which Tezuka worked on well before Astro Boy, so Tezuka is first either way, whether you accept Astro as the first or not.

Japanese flip movies have been around forever, and Manga Calender came before Astro Boy.

Three Tales came before Manga Calender, but it wasn't really a series.
