There are actually several different Phoenix anime, and a live action movie as well. There's the recent TV series, the Space Firebird movie, the live action movie, I think a Dawn movie too, and others...
Of all of them, I'd say that the only one that does a really good job is the beginning of the TV series - it did Dawn perfectly. Not so great on the rest, but Dawn was spectacular.

The live action movie (which is quite old I think) is said to be really bad lol But I don't really know.
Well I found the first part of the TV series the best one too. But on the other hand, I haven't seen anyhing beside the TV series yet

I'm a little hesitant to explore any of the Phoenix anime much. Given the fact that I already prefer manga to anime, I'm worried that I'll be so disappointed in the anime that.... well... I'll be disappointed. 
I always get the impression with Tezuka's anime that the fact that it was just too big a task for one man to produce on his own... that he had to comprimise his vision in someway. You don't have to submit a budget to draw a manga.... you just do it, but an animated work is a whole other animal. Budget constraints, Television 'standards and practices', company execs with artistic visions (or delusions)... they all add up.

The R4 version (the only one I know) doesn't even have a dub. It is in its original language only + subtitles (English only).
