The boy blinked confusedly, wide eyes crossing ever so slightly as he tried to disentangle Wato's rapid-fire questions.

"Um..." He said, finally. "... Yes, I... why? Do I look bad? Blood type? I don't know, no one tells me... Um..." He held his head for a moment as the blood coursed through him, leaving his face reddish, then paler than before. "Are... are you here for the conference? The professor will probably know way more than me on that, but... um... Yes, I think I'm okay. I should maybe take my medicine, but I'm... fine..."

Almost as an afterthought, the boy started searching through his various pockets and the parcel attached to the back of his chair- at least, he *would* have had been able to reach it...

Wato smiled sympathy. "Do you need help? Sorry to confuse you with a million quesitons so fast but they're in the middle of surgery in there and need all the blood they can get." She came toward Pippy, moving as if to help reach the bag behind. "Shall I get that for you? My name is Wato, by the way. Nice to meet you. I don't know about any conference but I'm here working at the dig. How about you?"

The boy blinked again, trying desperately- and failing horribly- to keep up with the fast-talking girl.

He coughed again slightly as Wato dug through his bag, looking for his medication, "Er... Um..." He said softly, his voice straining to be heard over the ruckus of the search. "I, um... I'm here for a medical conference, I think... Thank you, by the way." He piped up as she handed him a small orange pill container. He twisted the top off quickly and expertly, measuring out four small white pills and popping them into his mouth without a second thought. He grabbed a mostly-empty water bottle from behind him and drained it swiftly. After this whole affair, he took a few breaths and smiled determinedly.

"Um, I'm... I'm Pippy. Douzo yoroshiku-" He said, pausing as he looked a bit confused. "Did I say that right? My vocabulary isn't that big yet, and... Um, what's a 'dig'? Is it a game?" He looked hopefully at her, though he still retained his shyness. "Can I play with you then?"

Wato couldn't help chuckling to herself - at last an intellectual match for Sharaku.

"I suppose some people would call it a game, but it's an archaological dig, where people dig in the ground to see what they can find. There's a big group of scientists and archaologists up here working, and I'm helping at the site. My friend's also helping but she's sick so the doctor's inside looking at her."

Pippy's smile faded into a look of dark concern. "... Doctor...?" He asked quietly, his voice heavy with anxiety. "Not... not my doctor, right? A different one? A nice one? A really nice one, not just a fake-nice one who-"

He cut himself short and looked down at his lap as though he had said too much.

Wato smiled subtly as she slipped into a mental debate over whether or not Black Jack could be described as "nice".

"I don't know if it's your doctor or not, but he's sometimes nice when the mood strikes him. What's your doctor's name?"

Pippy's dark eyes shifted about as he continued looking at his lap. Finally, after a pause, he said, "I... Um, they... I mean, she... Um... Benito-"

He paused, coughing slightly, then looked at Wato apologetically. "I... I'm not really sure... Entirely... Sorry. I guess it couldn't be, since it's a boy, anyway." He searched around for a change of subject.

"So... So, this... um, 'dig', it sounds fun. Can I help you any? I don't know how good I would be at digging, but... Maybe I could carry things, or...?"

"Hm..." Wato answered, "...well, how would you feel about helping out by keeping an eye on another boy close to your age? He's a friend of mine and prone to wandering off and getting into trouble, so I need someone to help keep an eye on him while I get work done? He can show you around the dig too if you'd like to see it."

Pippy's eyes widened in surprise. "... Wow... Really? You mean it- I can help? Wai!" He threw his arms up in the air in an exceptionally adorable manner.

"Ano, Wato-san... Does that mean you don't mind me being around? You think I can go outside and look at things? This is wonderful! I promise I'll do my best!" He bowed formally, bending his thin waist and inclining himself towards Wato.

"I don't think it should be any trouble having you around, so long as you don't touch anything fragile at the dig. Here, let me call Sharaku now."

Wato pulled out her cell phone and hit speed dial 1.

"Sharaku-kun? I... What?" She blushed. "No, you may not! I don't care how you lost the last pair I only have one mot with me and I'm wearing them!" She winced at Pippy, hoping he was too young to understand. "Look, Sharaku-kun, I'm back at the hotel in the lobby, can you come here? I have a fun surprize for you."

Sharaku's squeal of excitement was audible even over the phone.

Wato smiled. "He'll should be here shortly. Meanwhile, Pippy-kun, do you have any more questions about the dig?"

Wato's hopes were realized- though not too young, Pippy was still too innocent to know what the heck that meant.

The boy shook his head, then blinked slightly, recovering from his sudden dizziness. "Nope. Your friend sure sounded happy, though. I hope he'll like me- no one really does, but I guess I can keep hoping..." Despite his rather depressing words, he smiled all the same.

"I'm sure you'll serve your purpose just fine." Wato smiled, not quite sweetly. "Now, before he gets here, let me warn you about Sharaku a little bit. He's very sweet and adventurous but a bit clumsy, and very adventurous, so it's important that you keep him from going near anything important or fragile or he's sure to smash it, accidentlly of course. Other than that he's a lot of fun. Oh, whatever you do, you must make sure the bandage on his forehead doesn't come off, it's very bad if it does. Do you have a cell phone? If you do I can give you my number so you can call me right away if anything goes wrong."

Pippy's eyes widened for a moment. "Um, okay... Er... Don't let him break anything... and keep the bandage on... Got it." He pulled a small cell phone from behind him and turned it on.


"My number is, um... 555-2428." He reported, looking at the device. "Oh, wow... I have 2 messages? I hope the doctor isn't mad at me... Um, I guess I could just ignore them, but..." He seemed to debate with himself for before exchanging numbers with Wato.

"Sounds like you don't get along very well with your doctor." Wato pulled out her cell and entered the number, then told him hers. "Anything I can do?"

Note: Eek! I've been busy, gomen...

Pippy looked rather abashed. He looked down, his voice dropping to a low mutter. "Well, it's not that I don't like- I mean, I owe the doctor and the professor my life, so... It's just, I mean, I don't want to criticize them or anything, but... They're really, I mean, they get so excited about their findings, and they kind of... But why would they pay attention to me anyway? I'm kind of slow, and they're really smart, and..." Pippy trailed off, as though he had been talking to himself. He played with his phone for lack of anything better to do, trying not to meet Wato's eye.
