Before Wato could answer, the hotel's main door opened with a crash.


"WATO-SAAAAAAAN!" A boy charged in, dressed in a middle-school uniform like Wato's but proportioned like a toddler, with a bald head and a conspicuous x-shaped bandage on his forehead. "Wato-san!" Seeing Wato he charged over to her and started pulling at her skirt. "What's the surprise? What's the surprise? Will I like it? Is it panties? Is it food?"


Wato swatted him off. "Behave yourself! Sharaku, I'd like to introduce you to someone. This is Pippy. Pippy, this is Sharaku, my..."

"Fiancee!" Sharaku interrupted.

"...CLASSMATE," Wato finished forcefully.

Pippy shrunk back shyly, his eyes widening.

"Sharaku...? E-tto... My name is, um, Pippy. It's really... nice to meet you..." His voice was quiet as he spoke. Slowly, he leaned forward and held out his hand. "I'm glad to meet a friend of Wato-sama. Is being an iinakuze* fun? What is it?"

"Nice to meet you, Pippy!" Sharaku bowed briefly before bursting into his answer. "It's great having a fiancee! We get to take baths together, and when I'm really good she gives me her..."



Wato brought Sharaku's answer to a sudden halt with a harsh stomp on his foot. "Anyway, Pippy, I thought you and Sharaku could have fun together."[/img]

Pippy nodded, then blinked, obviously confused. "Um... wait. An iinazuke is someone you bathe with? Does that make the doctor my iinazuke? I don't really like her, but she stays with me when I bathe, so... Do you have to be friends for that? Is taking a bath with someone special? If it has its own word, it must be, but then..."

Trailing off, he looked quizzically at Sharaku. "Um, maybe you could explain this whole thing to me...?"

"No way is Sharaku explaining this one," Wato intervened. "Listen, Pippy, Sharaku and I are CLASSMATES, whatever else he might say. If we also sometimes take baths together it's because we're also very close old friends and sometimes he whines when it's bathtime and needs company, and at any rate it's not something you're supposed to talk about with people you've just met. No offense."

"Where are you going?" Sharaku asked at once. "Somewhere interesting? Can I come? Or is it somewhere no fun - Wato can beat up any grownups that want to make you do un-fun things. She's strong as a boy!"

Wato looked up as Lamp entered. "Hey, you're back fast, detective! Did you find more blood? The doc's still in there doing... whatever it is he's doing." She frowned down at Skaraku and Pippy. "With no help from the peanut gallery out here." She looked back to Lamp. "You probably shouldn't disturb them in there, I don't think they're done."

Wato sighed. "You are helping, Pippy-kun, you're keeping Sharaku-kun from distracting them in there and wrecking things. Believe me, that's a very important job - one of the most important in the world!" She smiled, looking back and forth between the boys. "So, what would the two of you like to do now? Stay here and chat? Go tour the dig site? Have something to eat?"

Pippy paused, his head revolving ever so slightly. He was dizzy from the rush of options. "I, um... Sharaku-kun can decide. I don't really feel comfortable deciding things like this..." He looked down, his expression downcast.

"I can show you around the site if you want!" Sharaku volunteered. "My father's in charge of it so I get to go all over it, I know all the best places! The cave with the funny hole, the trench with the funny jars, and the snack bar! They have ice cream!"
