8th Man recently revamped their Amazing 3 DVDs. The discs now have menus and cleaned-up intros and end credits, as well as a few extras, including clips from the Japanese version of the series. Frankly, having already spent fifty bucks or so on the original versions, I'm not in a big hurry to replace those episodes, but the company is offering a disc (with another to come) of the episodes that weren't on the original versions for those (like me) who bought the original sets. It looks like the company was somehow able to clean up some of the imperfections even on the episodes that they'd previously graded as "fair" or even "poor."
These versions of the episodes were videotaped in 1974 from an L.A. TV station that was still running the series. The recorder was a pre-Betamax machine, but given the age of the source and the primitive nature of the technology, it's perfectly watchable. Considering that the films have either been lost, destroyed, or sit in collectors' closets somewhere, this is pretty much the only way to see the American version of the series at this point (about half of the series' 52 episodes exist in this format).
It was a charming series. If you liked the original Astro Boy series, you'd probably enjoy this, too; particularly since it's never seen anymore. Recommended.
