Kotan is a child of Ainu descent who finds himself suddenly in the care of a man-eating tiger named Dan. Dan has vowed to Kotan that he will help him find his lost parents. Can Brave Dan and his best friend Kotan survive the trials that await them? What is the Ainu peoples’ hidden treasure, and is it really worth it?

What you should know

Brave Dan was released in 2014 as part of DMP’s Digital Manga Guild initiative as its first-ever digital-only release. It is available for legal download on the emanga.com website in a variety of popular reading formats (ePub, CBR/CBZ, PDF, etc.).

In 2015 a print edition was successfully funded as part of the Clockwork Apple Kickstarter campaign. In total, 581 backers pledged $32,749 (of $13,500 goal) and the print edition (to replace the digital-only edition) of Brave Dan was secured as the first stretch goal after the campaign reached the $18,200 mark.

It is worth noting that this campaign also successfully met stretch goals to reprint the Tezuka classic Barbara (at $22,900) as well as Swallowing the Earth (at $28,400). Although the campaign failed to reach the $40,300 mark to needed to secure a reprint of Uncio, it was later part of the successful Kickstarter campaign to publish Storm Fairy in English, and the stretch goals to not only reprint Uncio (at $26,000), but actually re-publish it using higher quality colouring (at $27,000) and paper were both met – thus bringing this Tezuka classic back into print.
