Three-Eyed One, The (Weekly Shonen Magazine)

Weekly Shonen Magazine
June 29, 1975 (Issue #26)

The Three-Eyed One (1974-78) was originally published as an ongoing serial in Weekly Shonen Magazine (週刊少年マガジン).   From its debut on July 7 1974 until December 8 1974, the feature ran monthly (roughly every second week), with each chapter as a self-contained story.

However, likely due to its growing popularity, beginning with the January 19, 1975 issue, the series switched to a weekly format and would continue that way for over three years until it reached the end of its run in the March 19, 1978 issue.  As such, the complete manga series features an assortment long-running adventures interspersed with “all-done-in-one” chapters.

It’s also worth noting that, as is often the case with Tezuka’s works, when the series was collected into the Osamu Tezuka Complete Manga Works edition (MT-101 to MT-113), several of the stories were excluded.  The reasons for this vary.  In some cases the subject matter may have been controversial at the time it was originally published, however the more likely culprit is simply Tezuka’s pride and his reluctance to re-release content that he personally felt was sub-par and/or poorly received by the public.

This means several of the long-run adventures were re-edited and cut into chapters, with several pages/panels switched around by Tezuka to improve the overall flow of the story.  This makes the original publication dates somewhat difficult to track and so they often appear to overlap or be badly out of sequence.

The situation is further complicated by the fact that some of the issues in which The Three-Eyed One (1974-78) originally appeared were “double sized” (often around the new year) and cover a two-week-at-a-time spread.  These issues are denoted by a “・” , for example “75/01/19・26” refers to the single January 1975 issue that covers both the 19th and 26th time period.

Weekly Shonen Magazine (週刊少年マガジン)
1974/08/11
Althouh Sharaku Hosuke is a second year middle school student, he’d rather spend his time playing in the sandbox with young children.  Of course his shy and naive character soon attracts the attention of Sabura Kido, the leader of the school’s band of juvenile delinquents, who tease and bully him mercilessly.  Despite the protestations of his classmate, the tomboyish Wato Chiyoko, the taunts escalate until one of the gang rips off the strange X-shaped bandage on Sharaku’s forehead – revealing his mysterious third eye. With his third eye revealed, Sharaku’s character changes dramatically.  Suddenly strong and confident, Sharaku immediately sets about building a device on the school roof that turns human brains to jelly.  Fascinated by the change that’s come over her friend, Wato aids Sharaku in his task.  Just as the machine is completed, Sharaku and Wato are beset by Kido and his band of bullies – giving Sharaku a godron opportunity to test his device.  The effects are immediate and the bullies are rendered docile and vacant.  Strangely though, Sharaku returns to school the next day with his x-shaped bandage and childish demeanour back in place and the machine is disassembled – but the bullies are never seen again.  However a group of scientists soon arrive to study the markings left behind and they speculate on their connection to a lost advanced civilization.
