Tales of Summer Grass (Manga)

Tezuka's samurai-era short tale of revenge and redemption, Tales of Summer Grass (1954) was originally published in the June 1954 issue of Manga Shonen.

Originally serialized in Big Comic from September 1976 to January 1978, MW was created as part of Tezuka’s continued response to the Gekiga movement which opposed the cartoonish nature of Tezuka’s earlier works in both art and storytelling.

Mysterious Underground Men, The (Manga)

The Mysterious Underground Men (1948), was originally published as a stand-alone book by Fuji Shobo and released on February 20, 1948. One of his earliest feature-length works, Tezuka considered it his very first “story manga”.

Message to Adolf (Manga)

Another of his adult-oriented dramas, Message to Adolf (1983-85) was originally published in the magazine journal, Weekly Bunshun, between January 1983 and May 1985. Similar in tone to MW (1979), it is considered Tezuka's final, completed, epic work.

Castle of Dawn (Manga)

Originally published from September 1959 to March 1961 in Seventh – Eighth Grader, Osamu Tezuka’s Castle of Dawn (1959-61) is one of several samurai-style series, including The Shinsengumi (1963) and I Am Sarutobi (1960-61), which are set against the backdrop of important moments in Japan’s history.

Metropolis (Manga)

Metropolis (1949), one third of Osamu Tezuka's early "science-fiction trilogy", was originally published as a stand-alone, book-length adventure by Ikuei Publishing on September 15, 1949.

Cactus Kid, The (Manga)

Also sometimes referred to as Milkhall Territory, Osamu Tezuka’s cowboy adventure, Mr. Cactus (1951-54) was originally published over 23 monthly instalments in Shonen Illustrated from April 1951 to March 1953. It was followed by Cyrano the Hero (1953) from April to November 1953, before resuming for another 12 monthly instalments from December 1953 to December 1954.

Princess Knight [Nakayoshi] (Manga)

Although it is a remake of the original story, Princess Knight [Nakayoshi] (1963-64) is the more well-known of the two. This completely re-draw and re-written version of Princess Knight was serialized in Good Friend from January 1963 to October 1966 and was the main inspiration for the animated television show.

Age of Adventure (Manga)

The Age of Adventure, also known as "West Rush", was originally published in Akita Shoten's monthly Adventure King from January 1951 to August 1953. It is partially based on Tezuka's earlier amateur work, Old Man's Treasure Island from 1945.

Phoenix [Shojo Club] (Manga)

Phoenix [Shojo Club] (1956-57), Tezuka's reboot of the Phoenix concept, came a mere one year after Phoenix [Manga Shonen] (1954-55) came to an abrupt end in May 1955. As the follow-up to Princess Knight [Shojo Club] (1953-56), it was serialized in Shojo Club from May 1956 to December 1957.
