Originally published from April 26 to July 26, 1985, Osamu Tezuka's Say Hello to Bookila! (1985) was a follow up to Prime Rose (1982-83) and Kibando (1984) in Weekly Shonen Champion. Following the tradition set by other great Tezuka series The Rainbow Parakeet (1981-82) and Black Jack (1973-83) that were featured in that same popular publication.
Another of his adult-oriented dramas, Message to Adolf (1983-85) was originally published in the magazine journal, Weekly Bunshun, between January 1983 and May 1985. Similar in tone to MW (1979), it is considered Tezuka's final, completed, epic work.
Sometimes referred to as Tezuka’s Ancestor Dr. Ryoan, Osamu Tezuka’s series A Tree in the Sun (1981-86) was originally published in Big Comic from April 25, 1981 to December 25, 1986. Based on the life of Tezuka’s real-life ancestors, Ryoan Tezuka, it is one of Osamu Tezuka’s three medical dramas, with the other two being Ode to Kirihito (1970-71) and Black Jack (1973-83).
Tezuka's slapstick vampire comedy, Don Dracula (1979) was published, following the conclusion of his popular Black Jack (1973-83) manga's original run, in Weekly Shonen Champion from May to December 1979. A minor hit, in 1982 it spawned an animated television show. Originally slated for 26 episodes, only four were broadcast before the sponsor went bankrupt.
Following both Black Jack (1973-83) and Don Dracula (1979), Rainbow Parakeet (1981-82) was originally serialized in Weekly Shonen Champion from March, 1981 – June, 1982 and features Tezuka's take on the manga "dashing thief" character.
One of Tezuka's most well-known series, Phoenix (1967-88), is a series of twelve loosely connected stories – with the first chapter, “Dawn” published in COM magazine in 1967, and the last, “Sun”, appearing in 1988 in The Wild Age.
Futureman Kaos (1978-79), Osamu Tezuka's science-fiction tale of friendship and betrayal was originally serialized in Weekly Shonen Magazine from April 1978 to January 1979.
Originally published in Smile Comics from July 1986 to February 1987, Atom Cat (1986-87) is Tezuka's return to Astro Boy (1952-68) - but with a twist.
