Tales of a Street Corner (Anime)

Tezuka's first foray into experimental animated shorts, Tales of a Street Corner (1962) was first screened at Mushi Productions inaugural company presentation held at at the Yamaha Hall in Ginza on November 5, 1962.

Belladonna (Anime)

Osamu Tezuka was not directly involved in the film Belladonna, which was produced by Mushi Productions in the 1970s, but the story and animation, produced by his team at his studio, show clear influences of his style and narrative interests. For this reason it has been released in Japan in a DVD three-pack along with Tezuka’s adult films, Cleopatra 2525 and Arabian Nights

The storytelling style of Belladonna is based on medieval European witchcraft legends, focusing on the parallel development of female sexual power and mystical power, and directly based on Jules Michelet’s 1864 novel about Joan of Arc, La Sorciere.Read the rest

Undersea Super-train: Marine Express (Anime)

Also known as 海底超特急 マリン・エクスプレス (Kaitei Choutokkyuu Marin Ekusupuresu)

The Undersea Super-train: Marine Express (1979) TV Special aired on August 26, 1979 and, along with One Million-year Trip: Bander Book (1978) and Fumoon (1980), is part of Nippon TV Network’s annual 24-hour charity program, “Love Saves the Earth”.  Despite a relatively short run time (91 min.), the telefilm features a veritable “Who’s Who” of Osamu Tezuka’s Star System.  Each character has an important role, with many intertwining and overlapping stories.  In keeping with the central theme of a charity program, the story emphasizes the dangers of environmental destruction and the need to work together to overcome them.… Read the rest
