Weekly Shonen Sunday
January 1, 1968
A few months after the original run of Vampires (1966-69), came to a close in Weekly Shonen Sunday, Tezuka’s decided to follow it up with a samurai adventure series – but with a twist. Always one to try and capture (or set) the current trend, in the mid-1960’s Tezuka decided to try his hand at the yōkai genre of storytelling which was enjoying a huge bump in popularity mainly due to the work of a rival manga author named Shigeru Mizuki.
And so, the off-beat samurai adventure series Dororo (1967-69) began its weekly serialization in Weekly Shonen Sunday, on August 27, 1967. However, despite being a modest success, the dark tone of the series proved to be too much for the shonen demographic and the series was ultimately suspended after the July 21, 1968 issue with the conclusion of the chapter ‘The Cruel Cape’ – basically leaving the series without any sort of closure.
However, to coincide with the airing of the Dororo (1969) animated television show on Fuji TV, the manga series resumed its run – complete with a revamped setting and intro – in the May 1969 issue of Adventure King. Although the new monthly schedule was arguably a better fit, the manga reboot was unable to find its audience and the serialization came to a close – this time for good – a mere six months later in the October 1969 issue.
Please note that the listed chapters are based on the “standard” edition of Dororo (1967-69) as presented in the Osamu Tezuka Complete Manga Works edition. This may create some confusion due to apparent discrepancies with the original publication dates as several pages were cut (from both the Shonen Sunday and Adventure King runs) when it was re-edited for book formatting. To add slightly to the confusion, one issue was “double sized”, covering a two-week-at-a-time spread. The issue’s publication date is denoted by a “・” , so “68/01/07・14” refers to the January 1/14, 1968 issue.

Dororo sneaks off to investigate in the hopes of stealing some food.

Nueh (ぬえの巻)
69/10
Coming down from the mountain,
Hyakkimaru and
Dororo wander into the local village only to find it almost completely deserted. It seems Lord Kagemitsu has conscripted the entire population, including women and children, to construct a massive military fort nearby. Appalled by the samurai’s mercilessness, and understanding that it is a struggle for their very survival, the peasants plan a revolt – better if half of them die than all. However, Lord Kagemitsu has spies among the workforce and the plan is quickly uncovered. With his forces lying in wait, the revolt is quickly quelled and the village is burned as a warming. Not far away,
Hyakkimaru and
Dororo are approached by the spirit of an elderly woman who recently perished in the fire. She asks them to inform her son so that he might avenge her death. Convinced that Lord Kagemitsu cannot be allowed to continue his plan,
Hyakkimaru parts company with
Dororo and infiltrates the fort alone – ready for a showdown with his father. What he is not prepared for is a meeting with his mother, and the experience throws
Hyakkimaru off balance. Meanwhile,
Dororo joins the peasants in an effort to tunnel under the fort’s walls. However, they are quickly captured and
Dororo is held hostage. In a ruse,
Hyakkimaru attempts to prove his obedience to his father by executing
Dororo, but his real plan is to lure out the massive demon known as Nueh that has been influencing Lord Kagemitsu. After a surprisingly quick battle, Nueh is defeated and several of
Hyakkimaru‘s body parts are returned to him at once. In the confusion, the captured peasants escape and open the fort’s doors to let in the large force waiting outside. Despite bitter feelings over his failed plot to grab power for himself, Lord Kagemitsu and his wife are allowed to escape one step ahead of the blood thirsty mob that has overrun the fort. As they leave,
Hyakkimaru reveals to
Dororo that the time for them to part has come. He reveals that he knows
Dororo‘s secret – that she is in fact a girl in disguise – and encourages her to start living her life in the service of the peasants as is her destiny. With that,
Hyakkimaru walks off onto the lonely road all by himself. Although he was never seen again, it is said that some fifty years later, the Hall of Hell, and all 48 of its statues, burned to the ground.
