The Rainbow Parakeet is a direct English translation of the Japanese words nanairo (七色), meaning “seven colours” (i.e. “rainbow”) and inko (鸚哥 [いんこ]), meaning “parakeet”. Much like his namesake, the Rainbow Parakeet has an uncanny ability to mimic others.

Distinguishing Features

As the master of disguise, it is almost impossible to spot the Rainbow Parakeet unless he wants to be seen. In his most often used disguise, he has a wig with a straight, ear-length hair, a pair of “upside down triangle” sun glasses and a button-down overcoat.

The epitome of the dashing, “gentleman thief” archetype, the Rainbow Parakeet is a genius-level actor who specializes in mimicry and disguise. Wether it be on-stage, filling in at the last minute as a substitute actor or as a duplicitous temporary stand-in for someone famous off-stage, the Parakeet is able fulfill your needs and solve your problems. However, his services come at a price – usually requiring you to look the other way as he robs someone blind. Despite being pursued by the beautiful, though somewhat tomboyish female police detective, Senri Marko, The Rainbow Parakeet and his side-kick, the pantomime-trained dog Tamasaburo are able to stay one step ahead of the law.

Notable Roles

Although he makes no manga appearances outside his own series, Rainbow Parakeet (1981-82), the fact that he appears in a different disguise every time makes each appearance seem fresh and new.
