Magma
Also known as マグマ (Maguma)
Status: Series Lead (★★★)
Magma, usually called “Ambassador Magma,” is the protagonist and title character of Ambassador Magma, a science fiction shounen series which began serialization in 1965. In this series, Magma was created by the same spirit which created the Earth itself, to protect the Earth from an evil spaceman named Goa. He is one of three such creatures; the others look and act as his wife and son. Magma forms a friendship with a newspaper reporter named Murakami Atsushi, whose family are the only humans to whom Goa’s plans to take over the earth have been revealed. It is to this man that Magma gives a special whistle which can summon him and his “rocket-man” family.
In addition to the Ambassador Magma manga, there was a live-action/animation hybrid TV series produced in 1966, and a single OAV produced in 1993 by Tezuka Productions. The hybrid and the anime are interesting as a pair in that they feature one of the same primary actors, who plays Goa in both versions. Magma also appears briefly in the Astro Boy: Omega Factor video game for GameBoy Advance, in which he gives the summoning whistle to none other than Astro himself, who uses it as proof of the existence of magic.
