Azarashi
Also known as アザラシー (Azarashī)
Hello, My Name (in English) is…
The Japanese word azarashi (アザラシ) means “seal” – as in a mammal that lives in the ocean.
Distinguishing Features
You can usually spot Azarashi by his long droopy face and even longer, droopier seal-like moustache.
Status: Minor Star (★)
There’s really not much to be said about Azarashi. Another of Osamu Tezuka’s “old men with interesting noustaches”, his placid demeanour has relegated him to a few bit parts playing old men or just another face in the crowd.
Notable Roles
Azarashi’s activities are more or less confined to the early 1950’s. He made his debut as “the old man” in Manga University (1950) and then went on to appear in both The Moony Men [Manga Shonen] (1951) and Fossil Island (1951). However, sharp-eyed readers may be able to spot him in The Rainbow Parakeet (1981-82) as a man in the crowd.
