Magoo
Also known as マグー (Magū)
Hello, My Name (in English) is…
That’s MISTER Magoo to you.
Distinguishing Features
With his droopy jewels, giving him a somewhat mean-looking expression, Magoo is easy to spot in any role.
Status: Secondary Star (★★)
Despite being named after a well-known “nearsighted-bumbling-fool” American cartoon character, Magoo’s elderly appearance usually brings a sense of stability and a sort of “wisdom that comes with age” authority to his roles. As such he’s usually cast in (grand)father-figure roles, such as a doctor, a village headman, of as someone’s father. Although not evil, he can sometimes play antagonistic characters because of simple pig-headed stubbornness or sheer pride.
Notable Roles
A bit of a late bloomer amongst Tezuka’s Stars, he only made his debut in the Astro Boy (1952-68) chapter “Space Parasites” (1962) as one of the scientists that are taken over by the space parasites. However, for most English-speaking readers, he is probably best known as Dr. Tatsugaura in Ode to Kirihito (1970). He has also appeared several times in Black Jack (1973-83), among others.
