Yottsun
Also known as ヨッツン (Yottsun)
Status: Minor Star (★)
Squarely in the “don’t blink or you’ll miss him” category of Tezuka’s supporting characters, Yottsun and his wife Mittsun are a husband-and-wife duo who specialize in fading into the background.
He is most often cast in a “walk-on” role as a hospital orderly, a police officer or as any number of “men-on-the-street”. Even in his most substantive roles he simply delivers one-liners as a messenger or some other sort of servant or minion.
Notable Roles
Although none of his roles are particularly “notable”, his generally accepted debut was in Lost World (1948). However, what is notable is that he is arguably the oldest of all of Tezuka’s Stars. In fact, he and his wife, Mittsun, were originally created by Osamu Tezuka and his younger brother when they were still young children. The pair were modelled after a brother and sister that lived in the neighbourhood. So, you might say that the indispensable duo’s most notable roles fill the pages of Tezuka’s childhood notebooks in his manga proto-works.
Hello, My Name (in English) is…
Yottsun.
Distinguishing Features
Easily confused with his wife Mittsun, they are unmistakable, with their protruding, “three-pronged” nose and lips.
