Hello, My Name (in English) is…

Akatsuka Fujio, as the name of a real person, has no special significance in Tezuka’s manga.

Distinguishing Features

Visually based on his real-life namesake, Fujio is thin, with small eyes and wide, thin mouth.

Status: Minor Star (★)

A real-life pioneer Japanese artist of comical manga known as the “Gag Manga King”, Fujio Akatsuka was born in Rehe, Manchuria, as the son of a Japanese military police officer.  After World War II, he grew up in Niigata Prefecture and Nara Prefecture.  When he was 19, he moved to Tokyo.

Notable Roles

As a contemporary and friend of Osamu Tezuka, Fujio Akatsuka has appeared, primarily as himself, in a couple of Tezuka’s manga.  Although his roles in Tales of Tokiwa Apartments (1970) and Lunatic Japan (1974) were bit parts, they add a certain level of realism to the stories.
