Chao’s name is the same in both Japanese and English – possibly derived from the work “chat” which means “cat” in French.

Distinguishing Features

In her original animal form, she is a small black cat, with a white face and pink ears. In her human form, she is a lovely young girl with a pink bow in her hair.

Status: Secondary Star (★★)

Chao is impetuous little kitten who dreams of being a witch’s black cat.  However, after she befriends Unico, he temporarily changes her into a young girl to comfort an old woman the two think is a witch in the woods.  However, the more time she spends as a human, the more she likes it.

Notable Roles

Although Chao has only appeared in Unico (1976-79) and Unico [First Grader] (1980-84), she is an important and memorable part of the supporting cast.
