Dracula, Don
Also known as ドン・ドラキュラ (Don Dorakyura)
Hello, My Name (in English) is…
Dracula is the same famous vampire in both Japanese and English.
Distinguishing Features
With his old-school tuxedo, slicked back, high-peaked black hair, thick eye-brows and razor-sharp fangs, Tezuka’s Dracula is every inch the legendary vampire.
Status: Primary Star (★★★)
Although he has a pompous, over-bearing demeanour and an incurable know-it-all attitude, he also has a heart of gold – especially where it concerns his young daughter Chocola. However his tendency to take himself overly seriously makes him a master of pratfall comedy – and the perfect foil to his arch-nemesis, the vampire-hunting Professor Hellsing.
Notable Roles
Although Dracula is mainly confined to his own titular series, Don Dracula (1979) – a comedy about Count Dracula himself moving his entire Transylvanian manor to a quiet residential area of Nerima War, in modern-day Tokyo – he has also appeared in Black Jack (1973-83) and made a cameo appearance (on a magazine cover) in Rainbow Parakeet (1981-82).
