Distinguishing Features

As a dog, Ben is easy to spot with his big bright eyes and shinny grey coat. He’s also got four-pointed star on his forehead.

Status: Primary Star (★★★)

Noble and heroic, Ben comes from the pantheon of Tezuka animal heroes, such as Dan, the tiger and titular character from Brave Dan (1962) and Don, another canine hero who appears in the Lion Books chapter “Muse and Don” (1972).

Notable Roles

Besides his starring role as the titular canine hero of Flying Ben (1966-67), he has also made a couple of cameo appearances, most notably in the Black Jack (1973-83) chapter “A Girl who became a Bird” (1973).
