Astro’s Father
Also known as アトムのパパ (Atomu no Papa)
Hello, My Name (in English) is…
Being the father of the world’s most powerful robot is a role that doesn’t require spending a lot of time in the limelight. After all, who needs a name when everyone knows you are “Astro’s Father”?
Distinguishing Features
Astro’s Father is generally recognizable by his rotund appearance, smiling face and large, round nose. He also seems to have a retractable moustache as its existence varies, sometimes from panel to panel, often in the same chapter.
Status: Secondary Star (★★)
Astro’s Father was created, along with his much more famous wife, Mitchy, by Dr. Ochanomizu to act as Astro Boy‘s robot family. Although he is a father figure, as a robot he is actually younger than Astro, and thus attends the same school in a lower grade – something which often leads to some comedic results. Astro’s father is always ready to be a steadying hand, a fountain of advice or simply comedic relief.
Notable Roles
Although he is primarily a member of the supporting cast in Astro Boy (1952-68), Astro’s Father has made an appearance in the Black Jack (1973-83) chapter “Gleamy Eyes” as “Tetsuo’s Father”.
