Cobalt

Also known as コバルト (Kobaruto)

Hello, My Name (in English) is…

As a member of Astro Boy‘s family, like his little sister Uran, Cobolt’s name is reflective of the atomic age – in this case the radioactive isotope Cobolt-60, which was famously used at Columbia University in the 1950s to establish parity violation in radioactive beta decay.

Distinguishing Features

Astro Boy‘s older brother shares a strong family resemblance with his more famous sibling.  However, while he also has the famous “double triangle” hair style, his face is longer and more oval-shaped than Astro’s.  That makes them easy to tell apart.

Minor Star (★)

An inferior copy, created by Dr. Ochanomizu as a temporary replacement for Astro Boy, Cobalt has abilities comparable to those of his brother.  However he lacks Astro‘s intelligence and common sense and is often clumsy, gullible, and accident-prone as a result.  Although he often causes problems for the entire family, he remains extremely kind-hearted and loyal – characteristics which help Astro out of trouble from time to time.

Notable Roles

Primarily a member of the supporting cast in Astro Boy (1952-68), Cobalt has also made an appearance in the Black Jack (1973-83) chapter “Leaf Buds” as one of the boys in the class.
