Satan
Also known as サターン (Satān)
Status: Secondary Star (★★)
Amongst the pantheon of evil-doers in the Star System, as you might expect, Satan holds a unique position. He is the very epitome of all the personal characteristics that Osamu Tezuka himself found frightening as a child. The “King of Evil” might look a bit clown-like, with his bright red-with-yellow-stars signature outfit… but he’s made a career of facing off against some of Tezuka’s BIGGEST stars, including Astro Boy, Princess Sapphire, and Black Jack.
Notable Roles
Satan burst onto the scene in The Magic House (1948) as the King of Evil himself. However, most readers will likely remember his role as Astro Boy‘s robot adversary in the Astro Boy (1952-68) chapter “Robot Land”. Although he didn’t appear in the original, he did have a prominent role playing Mrs. Hell’s superior in Princess Knight [Nakayoshi] (1963-64). And, as if that’s not enough he also faced off against Black Jack in the Black Jack (1973-83) chapter “Captain Satan” as who else but… Captain Satan.
Hello, My Name (in English) is…
He’s Satan – the Devil himself!
Distinguishing Features
Satan certainly stands out in a room. From his bright red jumper, with yellow stars on his massive chest, to his little “Robin Hood” hat, twirly moustache and large cleft chin – sometimes hidden by a devilishly pointed forked beard – he’s the spitting image of a child’s version of the Devil.
