Black Jack (Weekly Shonen Champion)

Weekly Shonen Champion
November 14, 1977

One of Tezuka’s longest-running chapter serials, Black Jack (1973-83) was originally published in Weekly Shonen Champion (週刊少年チャンピオン) from November, 1973 until September, 1978. Although usually serialized with one chapter appearing each week, there are 10 chapters from the original run that were serialized over two weeks – one of which was an actual two-parter. In addition to the regular feature, one chapter, ‘U-18 Knew’ appeared in a Weekly Shonen Champion special issue and is thus considered to be unnumbered.

The original run was followed by thirteen sporadic special issues, with the first chapter appearing in January 1979 and the last of which was published in October 1983. Although most of these chapters were also self-contained, two chapters were serialized over two week periods.

Out of the 243 total chapters of the Black Jack (1973-83) manga, there are 22 chapters that have, at one time or another, been excluded from collected editions – five of which have almost never been reprinted since they originally appeared in Weekly Shonen Champion. These are considered “sealed” or “semi-sealed”.
